13:3492579During the quiet winter period, off-peak tourists are a lifesaver for Dover's B&B industry. No castle = no tourists. Maybe there's a Big Society answer to all this? Are you reading, Charlie?

18:3792609That's why EH should have allowed the accommodation groups to offer 2-4-1 vouchers Peter, instead of caving in/giving up and shutting Monday to Friday for 5 months.
It could have been put on the White Cliffs Country website, as well as that of those 2 groups.

11:4392832And now the winter axe falls on Tintagel. This makes for familiar and depressing reading:
http://www.thisiscornwall.co.uk/news/romantic-site-faces-winter-closure/article-3224698-detail/article.html
The economic impact of this on the local village probably outstrips that at Dover. Many of the forts on Hadrian's Wall also face this closure.

12:0092833Stated on the BBC that only 13% of visitors are over the winter months, but out of 360,000 visitors per year that is still 47,000 people to Dover Castle !!

08:0492941These are very short-sghted actions taken by EH.
Local Managers shoud have been given the authority to discuss with local people and groups, inititiatives to increase visitor numbers during the winter period, not just close them.
All the groups and bodies in and around Dover should write to EH at Guildford asking them to keep Dover Castle open and the reason why and some initiatives that will help keep numbers coming to visit.

10:5592961that's right vic, but we cannot expect their experienced staff to wait aroundto see what happens if they are offered full time employment elsewhere.
it takes a lot of training to get people up to speed on historical sites.

13:1892973My current view is that it will come in this year so that they can standardise all the contracts for all the staff, then reopen next year fully with contracts that are standard and more favourable to EH....

speaking to a member of english heritage staff today i was told that there will be new contracts coming in soon with lower pay rates and less attractive pension terms.
needless to say everybody is feeling unsettled at the moment.

07:4493751And so unnecessary; whoever made this decision was wrong, very very wrong - not even trying other things first, it doesn't make economic sense; their marketing team must be very weak.

18:5393828that's right jan, stonehenge is their most visited site, cannot be classed as a building until they put a roof on it though.
