20:2792790Sorry I didn't explain myself. I was just thinking about selling off HMS Victory. The sale of forests (our geography) to some is like the sale of historical icons to others.

22:2292797But at the end of the day as long as the 'icons' are protected, the public has access and the history is preserved, does it really matter who owns it? Many, many historical icons along with much ancient woodland is privately owned, protected and cherished.

23:0792800There are plenty of ownership and governance structures which would provide a more secure future for national assets than being owned by the state. As long as an asset is owned by the state it has the potential to become a political football. The state has no business owning the means of production unless you are a Marxist. Assets with the potential to be managed commercially should be so managed, by business people not civil servants.

13:1592854I am in a action group called 38degrees,you can log into them on
action@38degrees.org.uk.
I have been in this group from day one which has now beening going over 3years there are over 200,000 in this group.
We sent in a petition campaigning that the government keep English forests safe and do not sell them off,the petition was
sighed by well over 500,000 strong and sent to the goverment before they voted on the sell of the forests.
At the same time I emailed our MP asking him to vote against the bill.
Well as you they voted for selling them off, and I can tell you that our own MP voted in favour of the sell off, after the vote I again emailed our MP asking why he had done that, he wrote along letter back to me telling me why he had done that and I respect him for doing that but did not agree with him.
But I am glad to see that the government have stop the sell off for now.
But the 38degrees will still keep campaigning till we know that the woodlands are protect for future generations.

07:5792938But why is it a natural assumption that if in private hands, they will be ruined ?
It is still a small prortion of the forests that are owned by the State/Forestry Commission; are they so much better than those in private ownership ?

08:0192940You are correct Roger. Sadly fear of change and scare stories create emotion that overrides logic, experience and common sense.

14:2492981Well this also shows that the public can stop bills being pass if they all act at the same time.As I put in the post before 38degrees is a very good action group and is not in any party ,so please think about joining up with them and make yourself heard when the need be,One out now is fuel costs come and join us now do not wait.

15:0292984Hopefully, if in the future a group of citizens feel that their local Forestry Commission heritage woodland is being managed to the detriment of their community, it will not stop them mounting a bid to take it into community mutual ownership?

15:4392991shrewd move by ms spellman just to admit to getting it wrong, puts an end to the subject.
once a politician starts to wheedle it stays in the public consciousness.

15:5992998No doubt this will hasten Caroline Spellmans return to the back benches, she seems wholly out of her depth on the front benches. A pleasant individual its true, but hopelessly out powered by others and untapped into the public psyche. Mr Cameron must be spitting feathers at the mention of her name right now, as this forrest flogging idea has been an awful mess from day one and with no prospect of even saving money.
I saw her pushing this on the BBC's Question Time and absolutely everyone hated it. From little Libdem enclaves in Northumbria, to Conservative hamlets in the shires, to the spirited Labour council housed voters of Hackney..everyone hated it.
It was heartening to see the nation united on something!!

my prediction for the next u turn is the proposed "hs2" rail link.
the protestors are well clued up people who don't want their suroundings spoiled.
the line goes through safe blue seats, this will not go ahead.
