Sue
River is part of Dover whether you like it or not and your inverted snobbery does you a dis-service.
As for the council spending money on bunting etc it's called community spirit giving something back to the people.
Jersey states put up bunting all down Kings St,about 1 mile long and the busy shopping alleys.. The shops all decorated their windows and had one day special sales. The pubs and cafes were all open with outdoor seating and generally a party atomsphere prevailed. Seats were provided outside the yacht club and a large tv screen erected for foreign visitors to view the ceremony.
To summarise the states laid out a few bob and led the way and businesses followed suit. The result was the town was full.
What's that old saying'' you have to speculate to accumalate''.

Roger, No particular Councilors in mind it just seems that they spend more time arguing with one another and banging on about what they have done or what they are doing, the same old councilors are the same ones that stand each time they know how to work the system, some Councilors have been on the tourist committee for years but bring nothing to this town.
and when you look close there is not that much for people to do in dover other than drink or eat, over the last six months I have started to make a film about dover which I Call The Good The Bad and Ugly which I hope to show at the dover Film Fest Next year,so far with the footage I have taken on a day to day basis 45% is either Bad or Ugly,Shops closing,Garages turned into car wash centers there are three in dover at this time, the roads are a disgrace so are the footpaths with dips bumps and full of water when it rains.
London road with the gas works this as been going on for two years.Lamp posts Traffic lights hit by lorries knocked down and left for weeks before being repaired . And the drinking culture in this town is a disgrace there are no police around the town the parks are so bad and the lack of toilets in town and on the sea front its no wonder people are pissing in the streets.
And Ron was right about the market square it is dull We had a cruse Liner in on Thursday morning 30 Coaches took these Americans straight to London but when they come back what will we have on show nothing but dirty old streets .We have signs all over town about riding bikes £30.00 penalty I bet none have been issued. And a typical post from Sue we are Moaning well thats rich from a councilor so when people have concerns about there towns they are Moaning Well when you live in the suburbs I suppose nothing happens in there mundane lives so its easy to have a go at the masses.
Roger you talk about Services I never understood what that meant bus service School Services Better services until the other day when i over heard two Farmers talking about getting some bulls to service there cows then Bam it hit me we are all getting screwed. KCC And DDC along with the BBC are funding a film project Dovertime to be shown on the big screen in September in fact there offices are in the old sorting post office where is that money coming from,But nothing to brighten up this town.

Blimey Alan stick in an oul paragraph or two as very difficult to get through that.
Howard yes about the Premier Inn. I think it mustered up to about 5 stalls in the end, with delicious looking food that seemed to be free. Also guys were demonstrating remote control racing cars...but there were no takers and they left early by the look of it. I suspect its down to nobody knowing about it. Lack of publicity again...i didnt trouble the camera.

it's a shame about that paulb could have been a good event.
but like you say with lack of publicity it was always set to fail.

Pity the Market Sq doesn't have one of those French type advertising pillars where local business, theatre's etc can paste an ad as to whats happening locally with a where, when and cost.

Speaking from the leafy suburb of which im proud .We have not had a Tourism Committeee for many years.
Im going to say this just once more its up to Dover Town Councillors to show the way .Im sure DTC could have afforded a bit of bunting .
DDC is not just Dover .When im delivering in Ewell Minnis next week it will be a different world .
No fear of unruly youths kicking the bus and spitting at us .

Please Keith read my posts carefully .Ewell Minnis is not at all like Dover Town and has different concerns to Dover Town such as preserving their lovely country side .
No you are not peasants Keith but those young people are spoilt brats and i will not tolerate that kind of behaviour

Sue.
I don't think DTC can afford bunting; it has just coughed up many £1,000's for a referendum, to try and sway a minister's decision, on the PP.
I agree that the referendum did prove that the PP has fairly good support but I very much doubt it has affected the Ministers decision, therefore, a waste of money, that could have been spent on sprucing up town centre?

No i dont admitt to River being a surburb just those people of an opposte political view who refer to us as a leafy surburb ,We are a village with our own Parish Council.
Leafy Suburb sounds so like a new Jamie Oliver dish created to tempt chavvy kids and their deep-fry addicted parents........

Technically only cities (urbae) can have sub-urbs. Dover is not a city therefore River must be a village not a suburb. Greetings from Pedant's Corner.

River also has it's own share of " unruly youths" some are just as bad as those raised in the town and can create just as much havoc when they come into the town itself. The only difference is they live in the perfect

Parish of River.

peter river has become a suburb due to the ever extending houseing needs of dover.as a point dover has grow around and into it as dover has to whitfield,.
