  I am all for economies of scale.
  
  We do have too many layers of government and they must be reduced.
  
  Start at the top layer - drop the EU and not make local government more remote by amalgamating Districts.
  
  But the biggest problems are functions. Government at all levels must reduce its functions and do a lot less, interfere a lot less and spend and tax a lot less.

  And lower council tax. Which means more disposable income for the constituents which means more spending which means more private sector jobs. Alternatively more services for the same council tax.

  i have asked a few times on here for examples where unitary authorities have orovided the equivalent services of district councils at less cost to the council taxpayer, no answers though.

  # 15...70% of the UK are Unitary Councils so not the dramatic scene as is being painted....and it is Tory policy to cut,cut,cut..
  
  and a Unitary Council will be formed in East Kent when all the dithering is out the way.....and bullets have been bitten...

  # 20...we only need one Council for East Kent....KCC are too big and DDC is superfluous to requirements...

  barryw,i give up on you as you cant see the wood for the trees.the eu form of goverment works faster and gets the job right the first time,seen it in action many times over the last 15 years.
