As Ken L. from Warnham(?) suggested...
We should, " start afresh".
There is a consultation at the moment which I think is concentrating upon the relationship of Central to Local Government.
i.e. a total waste of effort.
There is a taste of the 'equanimity' argument used to downgrade the lowest paid and secure the good fortunes of the senior staff in the old joke...
Lets see who can punch the softest...you go first.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Can't understand the buck passing here.
The Cabinet would/should have agreed the strategy for the Chief Executive to follow.
If they did not & they then deny knowledge the Chief Executive is" hang out to dry".

Don't like that idea, Reg, it would be a step toward big centralised Local Government.
The more (in this case Local) Government is centralised over large areas, the more it becomes unaccountable, while at the same time becoming less democratic with a tendency not to listen to local people.
It's enough to see Charlie from Deal not knowing what Dover's Seafront and Castle look like.
If we had a unified district council doing the same thing, what a catastrophe!

i will have to side with alex on this one, the top brass will keep their jobs and perks whilst cuts will be made at the sharp end.
accountability will be out of the window.

My view(as reg knows) was against the concept of a unitary council for East Kent.
But slowly I am coming round to the Idea.
The cost of officers on 3 councils is costing us a fortune, chief executive kcc plus 2 or 3 tiers of officers below him
Same on D.D C
Then all the officers at Dover Town council.
On top of this the paid cllrs on KCC and DDC (last check cllrs costs were close to £700,000 on KCC)
The time has come to stop the duplication, we don't need 3 councils. nor can we afford them.
Time now to dismantle K.C.C. and look towards an East Kent council.
And decision making at the lowest level possible

surely unitary authorities would make decision making even more remote?

Disband kcc
get a lot of that work done by the new east kent council
also cascade decisions down to town council and community groups
real decision making

Sounds good to me Keith an East Kent Council in direct touch with town councils and community groups. This means that the best talent in the former KCC and district councils can be elevated to a place where they can do extraordinary work. Councillors should be visibly independent ,elected on their own merits and enthusiasm for their allotted area. Party Politics perhaps could be banished from this level of government downwards, with the town and parish councils steeping themselves in even more of the splendid altruism which they already demonstrate. Localism is on its way with or without David Cameron.

Yes Richard and DHB will give you a free berth for the TSS Dover at the same time.

And all those economies of scale will put tens of thousands - hundreds across the country, on the employment scrap heap - helping Keith achieve his 4 milion unemployed.

Pickles is against these mergers/unitaries, it's only Tarzan who is promoting them.
Local Authorities need staff to provide services - no staff, no services; Unitaries need less staff, so more unemployed.
