A real shame and I really hope someone will take it on.
Without a doubt the best live music venue in the town for a number of years (sorry Jackie). I've spent over a decade checking out the bands most weekends. Jeanette, Kelly (who booked the bands) then Mandy who had had the place for ages left, then it was the bloke (Roy?) who also had the Black Horse in Hawkinge/Densole. Then things seemed to get random with various holding landlords who didn't really get the 'venue' thing. My final straw was when the last babysitter stopped doing cheap spirits. Prior to that I'd also pop in on the odd weekday evening for a couple of doubles at £3.40 (iirc), then suddenly they were nearly a fiver. Killed the midweek evening trade that did and also stopped me spending all Friday/Saturday in there watching bands! From what I've heard Sunday lunchtimes were pretty legendary as well.
Rumour amongst fellow ex patrons/other landlords/barflys is that the PubCo wants to much rent to make it a viable proposition.

The Port of Call in Market Square seems to be doing well with usually all seats taken outside during the Summer months. They seem to have a wide-ranging menu with theme days now and again. A couple of weeks ago it was all Jamaican food.

Went past about an hour ago and the place was in darkness, just checked their Facebook page and it says that they are open from noon.

I thought that they were always closed at the beginning of the week at least they always are when I go past. Very busy at the weekends though.

That's pretty well known. Think perhaps they had the Park Inn as well?

I'm not sure about them having had The Park Inn. I wish they had. It may have stayed open.

They may find it difficult getting some of the extensions on those odd days approved.

I feel sure that people that live in that quiet, mostly residential road will put in some objections.

The Dublin Man O' War was shut and boarded up a few weeks ago. I assume it still is?

What is crippling pubs is the rent being charged by pubcos and the business rates that are calculated based on rental value...
Of course these bills are significantly smaller for micro pubs

The Golden Lion had a sign on its door earlier that said "closed until further notice".

All the things you need to get people through the door all cost so much money, bands can be anything from £150-£250 for the night. A local publican recently told me that to just show live sport on tv in the pub can cost a few thousand a year.It must be very hard running a pub now especially trying to compete with the big chains that can do a drink for near half the price of a small pub.

What?
I was in there only a few days ago?
They'd had a nice new heater installed only that day?
And the week before that, they'd spent lots getting the glasswasher or ice machine fixed or something?
I am incredulous. I believe you but it makes no sense. I have so many questions.
