What a shame. My parents-in-law make a special effort to visit Dover for the Regatta as they love it. And it's a real showcase for the town. Let's hope next years is incredible!
I think we are all guinea pigs in the middle of an experiment for which they have forgotten to set up a control group!

Dover regatta events ltd
Press release
Dover Regatta Events Ltd is committed to providing quality events for the people of Dover. During the planning of the 2012 Regatta it has become increasingly apparent that we would be unable to deliver an event of acceptable quality this year due to both financial and availability constraints.
After much thought and consideration, it has been agreed by the organisation committee that this year's Regatta should, with regret, be cancelled and concentration be focussed on delivering a bigger and better event in 2013.
The main reasons for this decision are the increased costs in the provision of essential services without which the event cannot take place - these costs may have been increased due to the many additional events taking place in Dover this year and the general decrease in available sponsorship due to the current economic climate. In addition to the financial issues there were also concerns regarding the availability of some attractions and volunteers.
Dover Regatta Core Group would like to thank the people who act as our partners in putting on the Regatta - most notably Dover Harbour Board, Dover Town Council, Dover District Council, the RNLI and Kent Police - for all their hard work and input into making this difficult decision, as well as the traders and other suppliers who support the event every year. We are sorry that the wonderful Dover public will not have a Regatta this year, but we will be back next year stronger than ever!

That really is a shame.
I'm sure that was a difficult decision for the Regatta Core Group, especially as it is Jubilee and Olympic year, but I wish them well for next year.

As some of you will know I spent a few years on the the Regatta Core Group, the event was actually started by a group of people to give Dover a free event and involved in the original start were people like James Summerfield DTC, Gill Gough,Bill Fawcus, and others.
The event this year would have been difficult because of all the events that are going on,but I believe it is a sad day and the people involved did so much hard work to keep it going but in a time of budget cuts and financial pressures it was going to be even more difficult.During the recent grant meeting the Town Council offered £3200 to the organisers of the event.Because of my close connection with the event I left the meeting.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Lets hope it is a one year blip and they return reinvigorated, bigger, bolder and better next year

Completely agree, it is a great shame! Just for info the Regatta came about after a conversation I had with Chris Osman at the Yacht Club when we felt it was a shame that our fantastic sea front did not have a sailing regatta. I was Sports Development Officer at the time and threw my efforts into creating an event where people could come along and try a range of sports and activities for free, including sailing.
We (DDC) handed the regatta over to Dover Town Council after 3 years and Robert Bailey and James drove it forward supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, some are still involved including Gill Gough. I have always been impressed with how the event has grabbed the imagination and grown to such an extent that it is without doubt the premier event in region. Let's hope its back next year!!!
