Driving in and out of the Station is a nightmare at the moment not to mention the parking. On Sunday, when the engineering works were in progress it was pandemonium with all the replacement buses vying for space to pick up passengers to ferry them to connecting stations. Quite a few of the drivers said it was an impossible situation and that they were considering waiting on the layby outside on the main road to pick up. So roll on completion, I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end

the last stage seems to be the worst, though they did originally say that completion would be in march.
once it is finished, with all the new shrubs and plants troughs it will be a much needed improvement.
noticed yesterday some land next to the station has been taken over by a car parking company, park all day for a quid.

Yes Howard that was a surprise to us but a private company has taken over the old BRS land on the other side of the bridge near St John's Road and are charging £1 a day.Intresting!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

john
there is no sign indicating who is running the site, the cars will not be easily seen by passers by, making it a vandals paradise too.

Looking at all the above, it does seem obvious that the whole project was not looked into properly regarding station user`s. Someone`s arse want`s kicking.

Improvements to the station environment must be a good thing for Dover. I hope they can also find some money to make the station more inviting for visitors. Sign-posting the town's attractions - castle, seafront, Roman painted house, etc - and tourist information (in Japanese, Korean, etc.) Of course, the one big omission is car parking and bus connections. If we're to realise the full potential of the high-speed rail link, we need adequate car parking at the station, and integrated bus connections to encourage public transport, for both commuters and visitors alike.

the integrated bus connection issue is a good one.
people come out of the station expecting a bus stop into town there.
they have to find their way into town using their own intuition.

Why not charge them £5 bus fare, which can be refunded if they spend more than a tenner in Dover, with proof of purchase?

£5.00 is a bit steep for such a short journey Colin.
Generally, there's plenty of taxis (and buses) if they are going to the cruise terminals or guest houses/hotels.
There could/should be a new bus stop there , but again, by the time the bus has gone down Ladywell, Maision Dieu and Pencester, you would have walked it.
Better signs would certainly help and with this volcanic ash disrupting air-travel, someone at the port or station should have thought about laying on more/some buses.
It probably is a case of "not my job mate".

Roger, I`m referring to a 1958 Hancock radio episode called `The American`s are Coming to Town`. Sid James decides to set up a bus tour at 45/- per head. When Hancock remarks that it`s only a short trip, Sid James remarks, "When the yanks find out, we`ll lower the price".

With the state of the sea front and market square, its good to show Dover Priory station near completion.

looks quite eye catching now, about time too.
we are the gateway to england after all.
It looks lovely in those pics, thank you Colin. The signage thing is still an issue thorughout Dover, but at transport sites even more so. Really clear, specific signs are crucial to tourist or ferry towns. Can someone tell su why we don't have sufficient? I recall having to get the (horrible, smelly, decrepit, cold and windy) replacement bus from the railway station a while back because the train wasn't running for some unexplained reason, and there were no signs around sayiong where to go or why, and when we eventually got to Folkestone to pick up the train there were no signs anywhere to tell us where to go and why. People were baffled and irritated. Just for want of a few signs.

Thank you Bern. The railway never has been very good at publicing things. They`re not alone though, walk towards the eastern docks like I did a few weeks back for the first time, and try and find the car hire places.
