Dover has just been awarded a grant to improve links with castle ,such as a cable car .I gather DDC had some input into this .????I think a tour bus ,flowers in the streets ,more cleaning of streets and still we would have had some money over.I can see visitors using the cable car and not bothering to come into town. They will spend at the castle. If it starts from the sea front how many will walk into town??
We could have knocked a few bob of parking.
Still im only a small cog in a big wheele no not a cable car.
You are right.....a cable car is a bit of an absurd idea: it does not encourag people to visit the town and other places of interest and it is out of keeping. Whose idea was it.......?

I'm all for it, bring it on, let us try to be positive as far as the cable car concept is concerned, as it is sure to bring additional tourists to the town which will eventually benefit the town as a whole (not a hole as some people may think).
Let us just hope that the powers that be do not use Burlington House as the ascending base to save money, Oops there I go again (these negative vibes must be catching

Ha ha ha ha - I am sure the logistics of a cable car haven't been properly thought of. With such an iconic skyline of the White Cliffs, things like extensions on buildings are frowned upon, so pilons and cables across is a stupid idea !!! Why not run vintage buses or a trolleycar system which are a lot less succeptible to the weather conditions ??
...and that iconic structure idea.... hmmmm.... something towered over by the cliff - they will probably charge to go up it when you can go up to the Heights for free for a better view

Been nice knowing you :)

I like ithe idea of a tram system. They have brought them back in Manchester and are loved as you dont get stuck in traffic and they are fun to ride. One going up to the castle sounds a great idea.

Didn't the Simpsons cover the lunacy of throwing away a windfall on a cable car, or in their case a monorail, some years ago? Is another white elephant really the best these supposed ideas people can come up with?

From the BBC:
Coastal resorts given £10m boost
Three English coastal resorts are to get a share of a £10m grant to increase and update their tourist attractions.
Blackpool is to be given £4m to build a 22,000-seater outdoor arena on the seafront to showcase cultural events, and redesign part of its promenade.
Nearly £4m will be spent improving Dover Castle and the wartime tunnels beneath it, and developing a cable car.
Torbay will get about £2.2m of the government grant to develop two schemes in the English Riviera Geopark.
Ten new artist studios, a gallery space and a refurbished visitor centre will be created and access to Berry Head in Brixham will be improved.
The Bleriot Monument in Dover, which marks the first cross-channel flight, will also be refurbished with part of the money.
Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said: "English coastal towns can look forward to the summer trade that comes with more and more people rediscovering all that these places have to offer for a great holiday or weekend break.
"This [funding] will help these towns prosper further, as more attractions become available for both tourists and residents to enjoy."
The grant is part of the government's Sea Change programme which will see seaside resorts given a share of £15m each year between 2008 and 2011.

Stupid stupid stupid!
The castle charges, let the revenue from the gate pay for the upkeep.
Dover needs the money @ ground zero, so 'tourists' will feel inspired to get off the coach after they've visited the castle!

They'll have Asda to make them do that

And if they get bored with Asda they can always watch the lorries crawling along the seafront.

AAAAARRRGGHH! Dover is a fab place let down by almost surreally poor management!!!! I love it here - I love the seafront, the castle, the countryside, the beautiful architecture in the town (albeit hidden behind some appalling modern edifices and detritus) the history, the simple pleasure of being a few minutes from the sea and hearing the seagulls early every morning, the people, this forum, the parks, the events that go on (even though they are not publicised and are apparently almost wilfully kept a secret from dovorians) and the fact that we are the bottom right hand corner of England!!!!!!!!! The people we have trusted to run the show should perhaps reflect a while.........

I am all for supporting the Castle and the management locally, but English Heritage have fairly recently dropped the plans for the £540m Stonehenge tunnel - they must have a fair amount of cash that was previously available that they can now spend....... ?

Brilliant idea. Something original and striking for once.
Also very pleased to note that the Bleriot memorial is getting spruced up in time for the centenary of the flight.

good to see you back again ed, i thought i was alone in being excited about the cable car scheme.
i understand the concern about the logistics, but we will be the only town for hundreds of miles with this attraction.
this will hit the TV channels and national press.
anything that puts dover on the map must be encouraged, after all, it is free dosh, for nothing and without charge.
i will not hold my breath on the subject of louis bleriot getting a facelift though.

I hate to say this I send out letters some 10years ago and again when I was on the town council my idea of a cable car up the side of the cliffe letters went to the D.H/B. and the D.D.C. and english Heritage I did get letters back from the D.H.B. who said at that time it was a good idea, english Heritage said it could happen if the cable car was in side the cliffe, well that is how far it got but it did make the local paper at that time, well it is still a big Yes from me A.S.P. anything to help our town and port.
