A few years ago the group which own the East Kent Mercury and sister titles put in a bid to buy the group which own the Express which was knocked on the head by the Office of Fair Trading as their view would be one 'local paper' would be restricting all important 'competition'.
Withe the Express being run down perhaps it might be time for reconsideration of the project?
Express circulation is falling but perhaps that combined with the EKM circulation of c.9000 would at least leave one viable newspaper, possibly with enough journalists to cover local news, rather than relying on stuff rehashed from the interweb and used as on-line click-bait which no-one seems to have found a model to monetise.

Captain Haddock is being coy about Phil Hayes, new employer.I expect you all know that Phil is Charlie Elphicke's Office Manager at the House of Commons.
Good Luck Phil. From a grateful taxpayer for helping Charlie.

Can't see the Express lasting much longer, very little local news, even less sport, no Dubris which has been great fun over the years. Such a shame, makes you wonder how it gets to this.

Those who follow Phil on other media outlets will note rather than the healthy cynicism which he used to display he is now backing Charlie to the hilt through his various 180 degree changes of view !
I'm not sure if this is an example of 'he who pays the piper calls the tune' or the 'Stockholm Syndrome'

Most London boroughs have around 300,000 people and one local newspaper, yet a small town like Dover has two. The Mercury was the better read until Graham T retired and the Express seems to exist on supporting DHB due to the advertising revenue they get. Dubris had to go as none of the staff know the characters and personalities in the town.

I DID offer but they were unable to come anywhere near my usual fees and there was some silly problem with laws of libel etc.
