Spot on Jan, we're all socialists until we're made a better offer

I look at him and think of him and his banana.

Absolutely spot on Keith, I'm not interested in the race for mediocrity, I'm just surprised you keep voting for people that take you for such a ride.
My family on my mum's side were all miners, proper working men with principles, not these handwringing parasites that masquerade as socialists to line their own pockets.
They nauseate me.

Socialism only works in microcosm and even then only in religious communities. The moment anyone feels they are 'entitled' to something which others don't need, or think they should have. the whole system falls apart. I think a re-reading of Mr Orwell's Animal Farm is in order.

Quite so Peter. Any system is doomed to failure when those who think themselves destined to lead do down the their own. engage with those that have their own separate agenda, and perhaps most of all;attention span verses sloganising.
Anyway, back to the thread...
FactCheck: are nine out of 10 working families better off?
"
The verdict
Mr Osborne is probably right about the nine out of ten, although by choosing to frame the debate in terms of working households alone he has made it difficult for independent assessors to FactCheck him.
Clearly, the government is taking from benefits claimants and giving to working families.
As things stand, we don't know which working families who will do best, but the small amount of information the Treasury has given us shows a pattern of the wealthier households getting the biggest giveaway.
We also asked the government, since they want to focus on working households, how workers have fared overall from all the measures introduced since the coalition came to power. There's been no reply yet but we will update if we can."

It is certainly time those on benefits and not working took a hit. Those in work paying for the benefits have had their income cut. Sadly benefits will still rise by 1% about the same as salaries so people in work will still have lost out more than those just on benefits. Benefits should be frozen and 'in work' benefits phased out completely over a 5 year period.

As I have said on another thread the truth is that the majority of benefits are actually paid to working people as opposed to those out of work;
Of course that does not fit with the image the government want to portray so we see a procession of stories about what are actually the anomalies but are portrayed as the norm so as to reinforce the message.
The other thing government never publicises is the huge level of under claiming of benefits, again predominately by working people (last figures published by ONS estimated this to be in the region of £16bn) mostly driven by the fear that if the DWP cock up and overpay they will not be in a position to repay it.
