purely an internal matter keith, politicians drag up terrorism as an excuse when they want to wage war.

The police take the lead in domestic anti-terrorism alongside MI5 and can call on Special Forces 'to aid the Civil Power' when needed. As indeed can MI6 when it comes to overseas intelligence operations. The conventional forces have their role too, look at Afghanistan.
Terrorism has not gone away and once we get complacent and let our guard down there will be a horrifying attack.
