I am going to be contentious but if this means we will not be fighting other countries wars and 'peace keeping' for them and our forces do not get killed and maimed then good, we might also save some money as a side issue.

In theory the police and secret service hunt out the terrorist not the army.

Balancing the defence budget and consolidation is essential.
The previous position where the last government had undertaken to buy equipment without ensuring the funding was in place was just irresponsible.
We are, however, left with a budget that is far too low and it needs to be increased as soon as possible to ensure we retain and extend capably with flexible forces to respond to a whole range of diverse future threats.
From the present position we can at least be sure of where and how future increased funding will be directed rather than it be swallowed up in mouth to mouth trade-offs.
I might point out that it has already been stated by HMG that the defence budget is the priority to be increased from 2015 as it should be.

barry
they said in 2010 that the deficit would be history by 2015, don't hold much hope of an increase in 2015 if your party is re-elected.
the deficit is likely to solved in 2026 at the present rate.

Howard - the Eurozone problems have of course impacted on growth which has put the deficit timetable back a year. I have said many times of the need for more public spending cuts (along with other measures) to help reduce the burden on business and help boost growth to counter the Eurozone impact. The need for more cuts is growing daily. I have also said that the Defence budget, being the only government budget not to benefit from Brown's largess during the so called 'boom', should be the only budget that is not cut.

Brian - they have a very small cyclical deficit having correctly balanced their current account during the growth phase of the cycle, the opposite to what Brown did.
I did provide the figures and a graph in my blog a few weeks ago.
They also, of course, have a strong manufacturing sector that has been able to cash in due to the Euro being pulled down by the weaker economies. The opposite effect by which the stronger economies have made things worse for the weaker economies like Greece by pushing the currency too high for them. All part of why the Euro is so structurally unstable.

Brian - our exports are up £50billion and these are made up of a whole range of different goods and services.
Our economy does need to rebalance in a way that we make more 'things' most certainly, but that is not the bee-all and end-all.
The biggest problem we have is the massive deficit that hamstrings the economy and combined with the Eurozone situation make a bad situation a whole lot harder.
