It is almost impossible to compare Dover and Deal as town centres, they couldnt be more different. Thinking that one successful town can just be superimposed on another landscape/demographic, is as naive as trusting Mary Portas. I love Dover dearly but when it comes to shopping, Deal really is delightful. That being said, I often have to nip over to Dover for odd bits, although in terms of weekly shopping Deal covers more bases. (fishmongers etc).
I still maintain that Mary Portas never really understood the nature of towns anyway. Not least because she made her name through working for companies that removed the individual nature of high streets - the very thing that has won Deal this accolade.
