Dover District Council stock is in such poor condition they would have to pay someone to take it off their hands! Sadly that is no help to those living in sub-standard conditions. When your families health is affected by mould and damp spores, when your curtains billow in the wind blowing through the closed window fames and you are in fuel poverty trying to heat your home with an inefficiant boiler, no excuse for not spending a budget allocated for purpose will wash.
Gary, many of the budgets are ringfenced for very specific purposes and therein lies the problem. Roger gives assurances that the money pot will not be raided in the near future, what he is not saying is that this is the first step to changing a policy so that it can be raided at a later date.

what i still can't work out is why money was stockpiled when it was urgently needed to carry out repairs.
these jobs have to be done eventually and we all know how much more expensive the work becomes if it is left too long.

Or you could add the price of giving the tender to renew roofs on council house's, to a firm from the Midlands who did such a bad job, it took them nearly a year to come back and fix the damage they caused, in fact I am still waiting for them to fix my path that they damaged.

The reason why we abstained is that we only wanted to have the money spent on housing needs and we asked for a agreement for the length of this Council because this has been rushed through at the last second. The Council said that although this may be the case it couldn't be guaranteed. This money is for housing needs in the district but could say be used for instance a shortfall in green waste. We are not whipped we discuss things and an agreement is found,as was the case on this item.I Roger have never been told how to vote either.

So why didn't some or all of you vote against it John ? I won't argue with you John over whipping, if you say you're not, O.K.
It wasn't rushed through, but it was date dependant and if it hadn't been decided then, it would have been lost.
I am unaware that any Council houses are in the state you describe Lesley, but will check. There may be some in the private-rented sector as you have described (there is because I have witnessed them (maggots coming through teh floor) but my understanding is that no East Kent Housing (Council) properties are like that.

right we are satisfied that there is no whipping system, yet all the blues voted one way and all the reds voted another!!
not for the first time either, so clearly we are led by two separate herds of sheep which hardly inspires confidence.

Howard, or each Councillor is psychic and and reading all the other minds which just happen to be the same as their own.

Automatons. The ones vote this way, the others vote that way.
They vote according to a diktat.

Roger if it wasn't rushed then why when we had a Full Council the week previous why was it that the only thing on the agenda was questions and motions from Labour members, nothing else, why wasn't this brought forward because the Council weren't ready for it because it was rushed, extra Cabinet meeting was also called.
The same reason you all voted for it Roger,we discussed it argued about it and then agreed what we were going to do,we agreed as a group, there was no choice on the matter really but as your side wouldn't vote to keep it purely for housing we couldn't vote against otherwise because of the way this Government is running the Country ad hoc,we might have lost that money. It is a shame that it will not be all spent on housing, repairs new houses. We also know about the problems in the Private housing but we will never discuss that and get a compulsory Register here because there wouldn't be any Tory members in the chamber because nearly all are private landlords, and I got that from a Tory Cllr.

where do the voters come in on this, are we just inconsequential?
when people stand for the council they stand not as a group but then become part of one once elected.
the suggestion is that the slum landlords will always be protected by the blues and as seems clear the ones with most council tenants in their wards did not even vote against the cuts in the housing budget.
no wonder a simple thing like a play area is never likely to materialise in the priory area.

In 2011, DDC came around Folkestone Road making inquiries about residents' views on the neighbourhood, among them a recently elected Labour councillor.
I suggested there should be a play area for children, including the many Slovak children who play on the streets along the road next to the traffic.
The lady assured me my view would be taken into consideration.
Then G. Osborne popped in with Austerity and council budget cutting.

Fair comment John but Roger continues to tell us Conservative DDC Cllrs are not under a party whip?
Is it a coincidence they always vote en-bloc?

Reg of course it is not a coincidence but they have to watch their leader to see what way they vote,we have long and some times heated arguments over items, not follow the leader.

Not to worry John I will copy it below as it is a problem I have mentioned several times on the forum.
Sorry to bother you John but as I can never remember if footpaths come under DDC or KCC it is easier to contact you.
The plant growth over the footpath at the Frith Road end of Salisbury Road is really dangerous with brambles now level with my eyes, I have bent some of them back but unfortunately that does not stop them growing. Could you please arrange for them to be cut back.
