he will never be remembered for his diplomacy, watching him talk down to the european leaders was great television.
he was probably right in much of what he said, but he will never be popular with his european contemporaries.

The right speech in the right company.
As they said of Angela Merkel , "she is making the right decisions for tomorrow without sorting out the issues of today."

would it not have been better to say such things in private?
it come across that dave was trying to make the others look silly, doesn't bode well.
the european union will be with us in one form or another for the foreseeable future, with apologies to dave "we are all in it together".

No such thing as private in those circles in Election years Howard.
Sarko can't zip his lip. Angela's talking to the Germans not the EU. And Dave ain't talking to the LibDems . Good
And now for the Reg. & Keith show.

only partly true paul, ms merkel may be talking to the germans but she has not been listening to them.
most radio phone ins there berate her for bailing out other nations, opinion polls show that is 50/50 on leaving the union and reverting to the deutsche mark.
agree reg and keith are much more interesting with a bit of barry thrown in.

If anything Howard I reckon Dave was talking to those who want to invest in the UK.
Don't tax the city, We are sorting out an inherited deficit etc.

i hadn't realised that the government had inherited a deficit paul.
you'd think they would have made a big thing out of it.

You lead a sheltered life Howard.
Barry will be really upset you have missed his postings.

This whole Davos thing is something amazing for the modern age...but more than a tad weird. Its almost like a modern day Woodstock for politicians and those who want to be seen with politicians, like Sebastion Coe etc...every politician from everywhere is there..even the lowly bottom of the barrel ones, all trying to rub shoulders with each other and with those at a higher level...
"Anyone seen Merkel?"
"yes she's in the Franz Klammer suite"
Everyone who is anyone even outside of politics is there..."they are half a million strong" but will the politicians accomplish anything other than get a few headlines at home...the answer is a resounding No.
However I feel I oughta be there..yes indeed...rubbing shoulders with the great and good, backslapping in the bar, frollicking in the five star foyer with much guffawing, dining on haute cuisine, all on liberal expenses and with no sign of a recession.
Cant be bad!
You know what its like...you feel you are missing out ..the only one not asked to the best party of the year.
They accomplish buggerall but have a hell of a time while doing it!
Put me down for a ticket for next year! lol

Dave's speech was of course aimed at the non EU markets and a nod that the UK will offer a low tax (no tax?) option for those companies/organisations/banks that choose to locate here. Well, it's worked well so far hasn't it?
He needs to be careful for what he wishes because if the EU does get its act together and heads towards greater political unity, which I feel it must inevitably do, then Britain will truly be left in the wings.
Sounding 'potent' for the short-term glow of a Daily Mail headline is a flawed policy.

surely they could set a lesson in these austere times by all staying at home and video conferencing?
