Just been through the town this morning. I witnessed lots of swearing and shouting as part of general conversation between youths and adults, 3 men coughing up and spitting out phlegm onto the pavement (not even into the gutter), tatty buildings and a general air of decay. Some bemused looking tourists who I imagined were wondering why their itinerary said 'Dover' when they were clearly in some developing nation.
Roger is right and I am sure we all know that nothing will change until someone is appointed to drag Dover out of the gutter. Piecemeal action is of no value at all.

Thank you Mark.
Sometimes it can be really awful walking through Town can't it ?
Admittedly, no one can improve the way people speak and it would be very difficult to stop people spitting - or swearing for that matter (wasn't someone arrested in Pencester for swearing - the "F" word, sometime ago and the case was dropped because it wasn't deemed serious enough ?), but and it is an important but, the Town itself can be made cleaner, smarter, more welcoming and changed into a destination for visitors. tourists etc.
But not for free and I do think that the major stake-holders should play their part.

i think that incident was in deal, however your point is valid.
i don't know when or if the law was changed over spitting and swearing, i do know that the dover public in general do not like it but grudgingly accept that nothing will be done to stop it.

Erm, what about supporting your local town shops, no wonder so many are struggling.
The town is not as bad as all that even though we moan on here about it at times.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

So far the multi parish councillor has shown his true colours...bopping a police officer and taking his trade elsewhere therefore depriving the Dovorians of their livelihood.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

Not forgeting the 3rd cruise ship in Dover today, Le Diamant, which has been here since Sunday for The Open. Makes quite a sight when you see the popularity of Dover for cruise ships. Just think of the potential for the town ........ if only we had some more shops, restaurants, etc. for them to visit.

Thanks, Howard. I bet they're charging a fortune to stay on that for the duration of The Open! I wonder if there will be similar ships for the Olympics? I guess Dover may be a little too far, but I know they are mooring a cruise ship (Deutschland) in London to accommodate the German Olympic association.

interesting thought kevin, hotel accommodation will be at a premium in greater london and beyond.
just a matter whether the cruise companies are up for it or will they just do their usual peak season stuff.

two arrivals today, top the costa magica, below the ryndam.
the sea was incredibly choppy this morning, this was supposed to be a snap of a windsurfer, unfortunately he disappeared from view very quickly.
he was o.k. when he recovered.

Great to see many of today's passengers visiting the town centre by bus .... shame most of the shops are shut! It's a real pity that the likes of M&S can't even be bothered to open in the summer season. No wonder Canterbury is so busy, and Dover so quiet. We can't complain about cruise ship passengers being whisked off to other places if we can't do more to attract them to stay in Dover.

kevin
your right
you cant blame the cruise companies,
Dover needs to look at business and how to do more
if they want the trade that is

No doubt the passengers will reflect the benefits of visiting Dover Town to the Cruise Operators and they will probably drop off in Canterbury next season!!

i have never understood why marks and spencer's do not open in the summer, they are a name known the world over.
i feel certain that cruise passengers in particular would make it a must shop to visit.
