Fairly softly thread, but here is the question? I found it hard to believe that anyone actually made and produced what was on offer. I have not problem with this, but when hand made and hand crafted is signed above the stalls. I think the people there have made what is on offer.
My Grand-daughter and I, love to visit Covent Garden in London, I worked and had a business in London, so we love the buzz. There is a shop called Lush, which promotes hand made soaps and bath bombs etc. All to make you smell and feel good.
I am getting to the point. As I entered the small, dining hall of the Town Hall, the one with all the flags and banners...in the middle was a Hand Made Soap display, they said it was Hand Made Soaps etc..the prices were more expensive than the ones we buy in Covent Garden London. Fair enough, these are hand made and crafted.
However, then when I went into the larger hall, where the Organ is etc. There was another stall, with "Hand Made Soaps"..but they were completely the same as the other "Hand Made Soaps". They were more expensive, but exactly the same designs etc. Are these hand made I enquired, because there are exactly the same soaps on another stall. Well, no, was the reply, you cannot make Hand Made Soaps in this day and age. We buy them in etc.
I then looked more critically at the stalls, and really felt, looking at the machine made cushion covers etc.that very little was craft wear.
This is no criticism, far from it, I like to give, see the unusual and enjoy talent. But I do not like being taken for a fool..

Sure there is an element of that Christine, but everything on Jo's stall is hand made as I see here in the conservatory most evenings

Yes, Paul, I saw the said Stall, nice lady your wife....
I bought from her. But then, again, there were other stained glass stalls, and you could see they had been bought in.
Good luck to your wife, talented lady.

Just. for the record Lush is a multiple with a shop on every high street so I very much doubt they make anything in Covent Garden. This probably reinforces your point Christine.

Pop stained glass on a window pane where the sun shines...and you think you are in a Church.
I love stained glass. Dover had Gaskins, a local talent,, quite amazing in their day, I designed a mirror for them, which they reproduced...Lovely. Their shop was, where the Allottment is, opposite the Town Hall, look up at the windows etc.
It is an art-form and I appreciate it. The Sun shines though on it, brings it alive and produces all its facets, makes it a living movement of art and cheers you up.

Lukeys wine merchants used to be where the Allottment Restaurant is.Were Gaskins there before Lukeys.I worked for the Lukey family for six years,Mr Bean ran the High St store.
The first hall is the Stone Hall with the lovely paintings .The second hall with the stage is the Connaught Hall.

Lukeys Wine Merchants used to be by the Underpass in Bench Street..
Il Rustica the Italian Restuarant is now there

Very nice too, offshoot of La Scala.
I still stick by my knowledge that Gaskins Stained Glass Shop was where the Allottment Restaurant is now.

I might show my rug making and how to do it next time,I love doing it and it is easy even for myself, but there is a cost with doing it, I found start small ,cost would be around £40 and if you like it go from there,or come and see what I am making and have ago before you buy.

My wife does lead, painted windows, and cards and dressmaking etc.I am not that good.

Lukeys was off the Market Square and opposite the Town Hall where the Allotment is. As I recall Gaskin's was halfway between Ladywell and the Victoria Hospital site but might also have been where Christine says at some point - I'm sure Terry will be on eventually to put us all right!
Interestingly, the stained glass windows in the Stone Hall are the only examples known to exist of Victorian stained glass depicting a mobile phone, have a close look next time you're in there.
