No real surprise with the continual cuts in central Government funding, maybe councils should charge for some services currently free at the point of use?

To be honest In don't know which ones are free Dave. The only one I use is KCC libraries and I often reserve a book which means it gets posted from the branch where it is to Dover. Postage nowadays is expensive and I would have no problem paying for it. Councils have to find ways of raising revenue in order not to cut services and as we are seeing bringing in parking charges in certain car parks on a Sunday is a hot potato.

Do the Dover Town Council set the Council Tax amount we have to pay?
Has the system changed then.?

I feel sure that you know the answer to your own question but just in case - each Town council sets a precept to District level which is reflected in the bill that comes through the letter box.

Howard
I don't think it's so much about more police but more about police priorities andpublic priorities.
its worrying with so many authorities able to increase to council tax

I don't mind paying a bit more council tax Keith as long as it is targeted, particularly towards the police and social care.
I take your point about police and public priorities they can differ.

I agree Howard.
The trouble is the perception by many is the more we as tax payers give then the more consultants get hired or fact finding jollies for our representatives go on etc and even less goes to the services that are so important to us the general public.

And education, as long as it just goes on education.
Oh yes, and we need the pot-holes on the roads sorted out so I wouldn't mind a little more for that.
Just remembered, how about a little more to subsidise bus routes? As long as it's spent on them that's OK.
Just one more thing etc etc ..........................

I dont mind it I think they should keep increasing it every year by 10% or more the council needs all the money they can get and not fair they are struggling mainly Dover its awful so the 6% is far to low of an increase and should be more.

Just been reading through the details of where our money goes and noted the following.
a) KCC get the lion's share as they cover education, social services, social care and giving elected members pay rises.
b) DDC cover refuse collection, recycling, parks and gardens, toilets and street cleaning as part of their portfolio.
c) Kent Police and Crime Commissioner get almost as much as DDC but I'm not sure what they actually do.
d) Town and parish councils get around a third of what district get but have no responsibilities other than allotments and the odd burial ground although they do give grants to worthy causes locally.
