09:5889883So what if someone has a personal grudge - what the police determined is what is important.

10:2989886The police and the CPS determined that there was insufficient evidence to mount a criminal prosecution. That is not the same as giving him a clean bill of health, that's the same as when you know damn well who nicked your TV but the police can't find any forensic evidence.

12:5189894the guardian running a big spread on the issue today, they are still of the opinion that evidence given to them is not being acted upon.
they add that a lot of people are not coming forward beacuse they are being treated as suspects rather than witnesses.
i seem to remember mr mcmullan saying the very same thing.

13:0489896I don't understand why this is getting more attention than Tony Blair admitting yesterday that he lied to Parliament to take us into an illegal war.

13:3289900mr blair is old news, two prime ministers ago.
mr cameron is our present prime minister, and has employed someone sure in his own knowledge that the employee had committed an offence.

13:3889903he said the words "he is being punished twice for the same offence" clearly on each news bulletin i saw yesterday.
the words were repeated in the press today.
if coulson is innocent then dave is being slanderous/libellous towards his former head of communications.

14:3689904Howard, you said """the employee had committed an offence."""
You know well that you are innocent until proven guilty, Coulson has not been proven guilty in anything. You cannot say that, you do not know that it is the case.

16:1189912selective quoting barry, the prime minister has stated that he had committed an offence.
it is dave that has dropped himself in it by saying something without thinking of the implications.

17:2889918People who work closely with the PM and enjoy his trust have to be like Caesar's wife. DC has had his fingers badly burnt on this one. To do anything but walk away from Coulson would be idiotic.
Hopefully DC will have learned a lesson - and won't employ people in future to whom a smell is attached.

00:4591531That was precisely the information I alluded to in an earlier post. I was not sure however whether it was for public consumption or not.

09:1891543Paul's other allegation is that the investigations went nowhere because senior policemen are too cosy with senior journalists and have therefore ignored evidence.

10:2591549the latest allegation have only been published today, mr mcmullan gave evidence to the house of commons select committee.
amongst other things he said that he sat a few feet from mr coulson who heard everything that was said.

22:0291891excellent edition of despatches tonight, even included a cameo from legendary local publican paul mcmullen.
it appears that the "news of the screws" is actually one of the least offenders.
mr coulson was exposed as a total liar during the programme, hardly a boost for the judgement of dave.

12:2491941Thanks for the tip about Dispatches Howard...I enjoyed it. it pointed out the absolute nasty mess all this is. That Coulson guy is a cool calculating dude and no mistake.
I had trouble getting a picture to begin with as there was big loss of digital signal last night...I watched on analogue in the end but by the time I had sorted that I think I only caught the tail end seconds of Mr McMullen.
But a couple of items of note...
There can be no doubt of the power of Rupert Murdoch and there can be no doubt of his absolute power. It is clear that everyone including MP's and even Prime Ministers are scared of him and his operators. This is quite openly admitted.
also
Did anyone catch the small inserted item about Coulson and his newspaper being fined £800,000 for him bullying his staff. Some of these news stories and even Coulson's resignations were buried deep inside the newspapers with only tiny coverage. The newspapers generally want this to go away. Perhaps the papers are all hacking..so the programme hinted. The TV obviously gave it the full weight of coverage. .But Coulson was quite an operator. Not the nice innocent lad he would have us believe.
But...did Cameron know about Coulsons past record of bullying when he hired him?
