CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE FOR KENT PCC BACKS RSA CALL TO TRAIN PUBLIC TO DEAL WITH ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Craig Mackinlay, Conservative candidate for Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, has welcomed the Royal Society for Arts (RSA) report calling for the public to be given lessons in how to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Craig Mackinlay said: "The Royal Society for Arts recommendations are a superb example of common sense thinking. Police can never, even with improved visibility, be everywhere and at the exact time to deal with ASB. The idea that police officers should train members of the public to deal with anti-social behaviour is superb. The careful balance will always be to assess whether it is prudent to intervene oneself or to make the appropriate 999 or 101 call. Personal safety must always be the priority."
Mr Mackinlay continued: "Those who indulge in anti-social behaviour have to be made to realise it's not funny; it's often scary; and it's always unacceptable. I shall be pressing the Government to give urgent consideration to the RSA's excellent proposals."

I heard this on the news yesterday and I personally dont like the idea at all. Mr McKinlay was very quick and on the ball with the press release above ( the original suggestion did not come from him of course) but I shudder at the thought of the ordinary joe walking out to try and sort out criminal behaviour. Without the authority or the moral authority of a Police Officers uniform, without the back-up etc.. this strikes me as a potential disaster in the making.
Apologies ..
I meant to abbreviate the headline before I pressed the go button..but as its up and running now...
If the Labour candidate would send in a press release would be happy to use it.

Too right PaulB.
" Personal safety must always be the priority."
As with the common or garden PC this will be more likely to mean getting tooled-up. Otherwise there can be no change; folk would still have to report 'whatever' to the Police.
This is yet another chain of inaction:First give it a catchy name, then an acronym, then onto ASBO-lix!

Indeed Tom
Here we are with little bit from the BBC....
"
The RSA, which aims to solve social challenges, says police officers or volunteers could provide training, including methods to defuse conflict.
The RSA's report says the need to get people involved has become more urgent because of police cuts in England and Wales.
But the Police Federation said officers did not have the resources to offer such training because of the cuts.
"
So...Im not sure how Mr McKinlay jumping in with support for this idea will go down with Police Officers generally. Tricky...when you consider he is standing as candidate for Police Commissioner for Kent. Sounds like this is part of the Big Society thing..or is that philosophy still breathing.

a lot of anti social behaviour is carried out by people under the influence of drink or drugs which makes them unpredictable.
the police are highly trained for these circumstances, a quick course for the general public is not enough.

We did have the Red Beret group from New York on the tubes for a while, but this proposal is a wilder sort of thing.
If there is to be 24 hour access to alcohol perhaps through the night it should be 'on-sales' only and consumed in the supermarket car park.

Darlings, it is simply too difficult!! There I was witnessing an uncouth type making life unbearable for all around him when I decided to spring into action and stand up for the ordinary man. Trouble was I didn't know whether to go at the lout with my Stanilavski, my Brecht, my Artaud or my Meisner technique. Using the time in make up and wardrobe to choose the most appropriate method I returned to find the scoundrel had left the scene anyway.
I despair!

all becoming a bit of a farce, i suppose anyone that was in the bullingdon club would be disbarred also.

Not in the least Howard, only those that were thought 'rightly' treated by police action, no matter the circumstances, are set to be barred. Those who, for whatever reason, had their Juvenal indiscretions dealt with by their form-master or a severe talking-to by their 'respected' parents need apply.
"Toffs only." In simple terms.

I can see the headline now: 'Have-a-go hero bankrupted by order to pay huge damages for violating human rights of mugger'.

What a crass idea, we will end up with vigilantes causing more trouble than they stop. More properly trained police officers is what he should campaign for.

17, 18: we don't need more police but PCSOs need proper empowerment.

I agree with that Peter, there's so much more they could do without interfering with their community roles.
