This is not a problem which impacts on the elderly. I know young people, some working some not, who are finding it very difficult to heat their homes, often going hungry so that they can keep their children warm. It really does harp back to Victorian times, washing up once a day, bathing weekly, limiting washing clothes, going to bed early to save electric etc, etc, etc....
I am struggling, having been recently widowed and then being made redundant I am informed that as I recieve £90 a week ( only until August, and then what?) I cannot recieve any other help as the amount I am expected to survive on is just £70!!
Gissa a job.

lesley
the whole point of the article is that the elderly actually contract illnesses that see the off, of course poverty hits all ages but they don't usually die because of it.

I agree with Lesley all ages are affected by and feel the cold. Very few if any of us oldies will die purely from hypothermia we might feel cold but the vast majority will die at any time of the year through illness or simple old age when the fight goes out of us.

I take your point Howard, but we are already seeing a rise in the number of malnourished children, suicide is on the rise and many people who visit their GP cannot afford perscription charges.
I have, in the last few days spoken to a young Mum ( married, husband on min wage) whose son has just been in hospital with a chest infection attributed to the damp spores in her home. Even tho' she keeps it well ventilated she can only afford to use her heating for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening when she bathes her son. She warms the beds with hot water bottles.

horrible situation in modern day england lesley, i do remember being a kid(honest) during big freezes and a shilling for the meter being out of the equation.
sad that a 100 years on we still have the same problems, a lot of it is down to our leaders that have never encountered such things.

Remember if You know of any elderly relatives or neighbours during this cold spell, pop in and check that they are OK. While You're there it might be an idea to get them to turn down their thermostat one or two degrees. There's a planet to save and the more People that cut back on their heating the less carbon dioxide they release.
Actually this is exactly what the government is doing. They are responsible for causing the demise, not only of our industrial base or what is left of it, but on those who cannot afford to heat their homes. That is the point of the article which I think is rather tame and beats around the bush somewhat.
I'd go much further than Mr. Nelson and describe what is happening as an absolute scandal where social historians will, in the future, put this carbon religion at the forefront of the steep decline of the United Kingdom in terms of its economy and therefore its whole future.
Bad days ahead for us all.

Not necessarily Brian, a lot is down to the Goverrnments' (both of them) policy on energy - too much reliance on green energy and not enough on clean-coal burning and nuclear energy.
