this looks rather worrying coupled with the cut in the winter fuel allowance.

An increase in fuel prices means an increase in VAT, so it's unlikely that those living in fuel poverty will see compassion from the government.
One would have to suggest charity spending in order to help cover the costs of heating for the elderly.

The cost of fuel is criminal considering the profits the suppliers are making. I am really worried about this winter given that my summer gas bill was over £40. Heaven knows what it will be when I put the central heating on. Luckily my husband does not feel the cold. It's the hot water bottle for me. So far have not had to give in and heat the flat...

The stark statistic that 2,700 hard- up people die each year because they can`t afford to heat their homes should shame the Government. It means more people now die while trying to keep warm than are killed on our roads.
Yet when it comes to people being forced between heating and eating with fatal consequences, our Government does nothing.Typical of its wooly approach to the crisis was the Prime Minister`s energy summit. He summond the Chiefs of the `Big Six`gas and elecricity companies to discuss how to tackle the growing problem of fuel poverty. But the results were pathetic.
Cameron had the chance to bang the bosses`heads together and make them see reason about soaring gas and electricity prices. But he failed miserably
Government are out of touch, not aware that people are having to choose between food and heating. With the cold weather upon us ,winter deaths this year will soon be mounting.
Polititcians have let inflation force essential fuel beyond the reach of many ordinary folk.

I agree Reg to have to choose if you eat or keep warm, in this day and age is not right but lets face it the likes of David Cameron will not have to make that chose.
Anyone remember Edwina Curries pertinent demonstration of the empathy, capacity to patronise, and care of the last Tory government when she advised elders to wear a woolly hat indoors as this would keep them warmer?

If only those who choose to rail at the big 'G' (or the cobbled together big 'G') did so in close proximity to an elderly person then the warmth of their wrath could be of some immediate good. Otherwise. Is it not the same use as current 'G' thinking? A mere box ticked?
If!!!
There is concern that some in the locale will be adversely affected what practical steps can be taken?
Is it a matter of, "This is what we pay our Rates/Taxes for!"

A single pension over here is £9282
Married pension is £15409
I don't know how that compares to the UK.As regards the fuel allowance this should be increased and paid in named energy vouchers to oap.s to stop unscruplous relatives from asking granny for help with their christmas presents for little beckham or trixiebell.

Just a reminder. If you know of any vulnerable elderly people in your street pop in and check their thermostat. Turn it down a degree or two in order to cut their carbon emissions and help to save the planet. This advice comes from Chris Huhne the energy minister.

A small note if dissent, why is it that the elderly are always given as an example as not being able to heat themselves properly in the Winter. I am elderly/old and I make damn sure I am warm and I eat properly but then I do not smoke or go out drinking every day and seldom buy expensive pre-prepared meals like some.
Yes, some of us do struggle so do all the other age groups on low income, why are we always given as an example. Sorry about the moan but it niggles me.

Godfrey Bloom MEP, the UKIP Energy spokesman, said:
"The Government doesn't have the bottle to make serious spending cuts, so it is plainly absurd that they make things even harder for people by deliberately ramping up energy costs."
The increase in energy bills is not only due to the policy of the suppliers, but also to the Government's Climate Change Act (which is also Labour's). UKIP sees the problem as stemming from this Act and all the red tape it implies for businesses.
My personal view is that carbon reduction policies should come about through technical innovations, hence research, not through red-tape policies (carbon tickets for businesses or "buying or selling" carbon rights etc. between nations (see Kyoto protocol).

the problem is that people get less resistant to low temperatures as they get older, hence the deaths from hypothermia.
add to that the older people get the less they move around making the problem worse.

Well done Jan and long may it last but you are a small percentage of your era who experienced long term hardship, making ends meet for their families etc.
Many battle through winter with hot water bottles, wooly jumpers, hats and blankets and wish winter would end.
They need our help.
#14. Chris Huhne can always go back to his warm home!!!!! The elderly should be allowed to keep their thermostates ( If they have them ) at living standards and let the rest to save the planet.
Is this the way to run a Dance Hall?
I agree with Jan - however, as Howard indicates, there are many elders without the means to keep warm and fed and without the circles of support that will keep them on the radar. Many - more than we might think - do not claim the benefits to which they are entitled because (de facto) they are too vulnerable to understand how vulnerable they are and they have slipped through the nets. Or they do not believe they are "entitled". That latter feeling is not helped by constant tabloid stoking of the benefits insults - fine if people are genuine spongers, but the message is loud and clear from the red tops: claim and you are scum. Not a good message for elders with pride and independence at their core.
