17:0091342City status relates to the importance of a place - in times gone by it used to having a cathedral that gave this importance, then being big and industrialised, now it's strategic importance that should be the clincher for Dover.
In a more light-hearted vein - Brighton was created a city by the combining of Brighton and Hove, two separate towns previously in adminstrative terms. So maybe Dover with the port and Folkestone with the channel tunnel could combine to form a new city in the same way. Just imagine the arguments over the name

17:1591349The Port-Town of Dover in the fair County of Kent is more than enough to be happy with.
We have the Light-Tower Church at the Castle to assure Port-status of our Town.
Are some people trying to build a Babylonian tower or something, with this city-status pallaver?

17:2591356So where is the money coming from Barry? I am not opposed to Dover becoming a city, but lets face reality,it has no real chance,so to make it compete with the other places spend lots of money on promotion,We can't even get DTIZ off the ground and that has been on the cards for over 30 years.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

18:2191363I've just had a look at the guidelines for submission for the competition and I don't see that it needs a lot of money spent on it.
The submission needs two hard copies (one for Liz, one for Phil?

) consisting of 5 A4 pages of introduction to make the case, 20 A4 pages profiling the area, 50 photos printed two to an A4 page to show details of the area, and two maps showing the city centre and surrounding areas.
The guidelines say that the process is designed to minimise the expense involved in making a submission, and even down to the quality of the photos which can be on normal, not photo, paper and should be factual not artistic. The information for the 20 pages of profile and maps should be at someone's fingertips if not already available online.
All that is then needed is some commitment and creative thinking to make the case.
No great spend on promotion is needed - it might have been in previous competitions but doesn't seem to be the case in this one.

The cost thing is a red herring.

19:0791379Well what a fabulous idea! Good luck to our energetic local MP with this - I am 100% behind it. What can I do to help?

19:1591380Medway estimate it will cost £25,000 plus officer time that could be £££'s and with Medway already applying with a population of 200.000 they are bound to be favourites.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

20:1391391I love Dover, I want Dover to succeed, show the world how great it is and what it has to offer.
I am confused by this, and it all comes down to semantics...again! This process/competition hinges on the idea that 'City' is a term that can be applied for, not by population or religious status, but by request to boost profile.
By this reasoning I suggest that if we do not 'win' this title, we should apply for 'village'. Just think "Dover, England's biggest village" ...what an accolade!
Or if we really run with the idea that a word does not have to adhere to it's meaning and it can mean what we want as long as it it promotes potential: "Starship Dover" what investor would turn down an opportunity to invest in a 'starship' well not a starship exactly...more of a town, called a starship. But who would notice?
A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

20:1991394Sorry Bern but I also think it would be a waste of time never mind the cost of us trying to be a city, the chances of a relatively small town like Dover becoming a city must be almost nil.
I feel guilty saying this but I am a realist who thinks the cost could be put to better use. If we can get the Peoples Port that will be different thing as it will mean the area is on an up rather than stagnant as it seems to be now.
Having said all that if it does go ahead I would support the idea, contrary creature that I am.
