09:5991273As reported in the paper this morning Charlie is suggesting we should apply for City status.
I found the vox-pop done by the Express rather disappointing as it seemed most of those asked about it simply 'did not get it'.
They correctly said that Dover needs more investment (the size comment has no relevance), but one of the reasons for Dover going for City status is to get national attention in order to help attract investment. To suggest the need 'to get investment' before going for City status simply shows, as I said, they 'do not get it'. Perhaps the interviewer did not explain it well enough.
Good luck to Charlie with this. Going for it does not cost and anything is worth trying. Dover needs something different and extra to help turn it around and, who knows....

10:1491281we have nowhere near the population to justify city status, the other criteria for small towns is that if they have a cathedral they qualify.
wish charlie luck though.

10:5191284Howard - size is not a criteria and a Cathedral requirement was dropped many years ago.
Come on Howard - dont be so negative.

11:5391285Medway is also after City status and they are in a spot of bother having spent Thousands of £££'s in printing etc saying that they are a city already and they are not.Once again the idea is fine but how much will it cost and who supplies the money.
Answer tens of thousands and it is your money.Remember it is the Tories who are saying cut everything now,and then they come up with another waste of public money.Heritage is fine and I don't have a problem promoting the Heritage of Dover, remember the George Cross Campaign, despite the support and effort it go nowhere.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

12:1291289So, so, negative. This need not cost a lot of money at all. That Medway may have wasted money does not mean we have to.

14:5891319And keeping a positive note, a lot of companies like the status of having offices in cities which should help to make a 'new' city an attractive proposition for them. Everything helps and Dover deserves all the help it can get.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

15:2391321Well said Chris/Paul.
I can't help think that the sneering is prompted for political reasons rather than what is good for Dover.

15:3891323Apart from raising Dover's profile in the media I could not see the point of Charlie's idea but Chris has made a very good post, although I still doubt it will ever happen.

15:5291324In some ways you could almost say that getting the status is less important than being positive about the proposal. A lot of good press could be had about trying as long as people are all together in talking about the positive reasons that Dover deserves the award.

16:2191334Nothing to do with Politics, just don't want to see large pots of money going into it when in reality we haven't got a chance,I always stick up for Dover on everyfront, but we have no chance so why waste the money?

16:2391335Nobody is suggesting that large pots of money go into it, except you, JHG.
I do get fed up with ill-considered negativity and sniping at any new idea or suggestion.
