i must take you to task here mr norman, a lot of criticism has to be levelled at the towns trader and not the councils.
the christmas lights switch on in a few weeks will be organised by the town council, will be a fun event - then when it ends try to get a cup of tea in the town, all outlets will be closed.
cruise ship customers during the summer will confirm that the stroll from the terminal to the town on a sunday will be marked with cafes showing "closed signs".

The Town Council have got local shops taking part this year, we are trying to work with the people of the Town, not just for Xmas but 2012 and beyond, we will be out asking and noting what you say.

But should it be your job Sheila, or that of the Council officers ?
Surely it would be much better to have someone working full time on this (and 2012 and beyond), financially supported by the Town and District Councils and the Harbour Board, plus income from memberships (businesses).

If a councillor or even a volunteer is willing and able to do the job why waste OUR money on somebody else.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

roger is suggesting that council officers can take over most of the workload which would mean no extra cost other than any overtime payments.

Can see where you are coming from Roger, but as we have always done the Days event and the switch on, as Town council and councillors it was decided to try and work with the shops and cafes, to try and get them to stay open so people can enjoy some life after the switch on

I wasn't talking just about the Christmas Lights, but supporting Dover and the businesses - full time.
I firmly believe that separate body/person should be "managingt" the Town and working on a range of projects to move Dover forward, not just ad-hoc ideas or projects.
Dover deserves better, but until that is realised or accepted, no real progress will be made.
