10:5289760Thought it might be of interest to show these. Calais was extremely clear at dawn this morning, its not normally as clear as this and with a touch of mirage too. In the centre of the pics you can spot the famous Hotel de Ville..that spectacular piece of architecture in central Calais, a couple of miles inland.Im breaking out the fine wine and the garlic as Im almost living there...wonder what it would be like to live there...

11:4589771Wow, super photos, especially the top one.
Calais often looks dramatic when the sun is streaming down from behind clouds. Here is a photo I took a couple of years ago when it looked like a thermonuclear warhead had exploded over the town.
Several hi-res photos in this sequence at:

13:3789782Yes saw how clear it was on the way to work this morning, sounds great to live there with their very laid back life style not like our rush here and there one.

14:0789789Great pics, confirms my opinion that the best way to view Calais is from this side of the channel.

Hi Lorna..here is your picture. Problem was it was bigger than the 2MB max we are allowed. You have to reduce them a tad before upload and then they will pop up easy enough. I have reduced it to 600pixels wide in this case and the pix dont suffer qualitywise at all. Give it another go soon.

22:2790906The pictures on the thread correspond to a research I've been making the last few days: that the ancestors of all the Celts of the British Isles passed through Dover before settling all over Britain, Scotland and Ireland.
With the modest boats of thousands of years ago, they would have made the crossong to Dover, as the White Cliffs of Albion are visible in Calais as much as the Gaulic cliffs are visible from here.
The pictures of the Sun rising over the English Ocean are fantastic!

22:4390911No it has always been a channal never a ocean. Ocean in the Dictionary= Great body of water surrounding the land of the globe.Channel= Natural or artificial bed of running water , wider than strait ,joining two larger pieces or seas ie- English Channel.

00:1990917That's right, Howard. For people crossing in boats thousands of years ago, it was an ocean-going achievement.
Lorna, you must have taken your picture around 3 in the afternoon. It blends in well with the others.
