I saw that great Leeds United team playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge..way back in the old days. Norman Hunter was the one who used to 'bite yer legs' but yes indeed Big Jack Charlton was a no nonsense centre back..tough northern gritty type...who in his afterlife went on to take up fishing and then manage the Irish national team...we had great moments under Jack and made the World Cup finals where we beat them overpaid Italians.

But back for a moment to the Champions League Final and a great match it was as we said. But ..and here's the big question. is Messi the greatest player ever as some of our over enthusiastic commentators seem to suggest??
They are already eulogising his feats as though he is one of the immortals. I love watching him myself but surely we had great players over the years that cannot be easily shifted off their 'greatest ever' mantle. I speak of that genial fun loving Oirishman in the shape of George Best, or that hand of god Argentinian with the tousled black hair Diego Maradonna, or Zenidene Zidane who ran every game he played in in super maestro fashion. Thats just a few for the mix, there are others. Great Brazilians like Pele and Rivelino and so on.
Messi is 23 so still has a long way to go and may yet establish himself as the greatest ever. But is it a bit too soon for such adoration??...although he is a delight to watch I must say.

messi is going in the right direction, for me it has always been pele as the one that stands out amongst all the greats.
he never blotted his copybook with tantrums or bad tackles, always set a good example to youngsters.
we will never know what best could have done at international level due to him playing for northern ireland so never played in a world cup or european championship.

Family members and friends went to the Grand Hotel to watch the match on the cinema screen,I was babysitting my daughter and unable to drink. The match was superb but agony to watch for us United fans. A fair result and a great advert for the game.
Better luck next year

I knew George Best when I lived in Manchester in the early 70's. Biggest asshole I ever met.

That must have been the late 70's 'cos in the early 70's Bestie was very approachable and had interest in a hairdressers named 'A cut above' just off Deansgate close to where I worked in an office of a small branch of the civil service.

I was there 72-74. He owned a pub round the corner from my office in Spring Gardens. I dont remember its name but we called it the Dirty Duck. He used to leave me out when it was his round, then he would say to the barmaid: 'and one for the boss eyed git'.

No, Spring Gardens in the city centre. Runs eastwards from Market St and crosses the top of King St.
