Those were the days Paul, and he provided my wedding taxis.

Terry you beat me to it, I passed by around 1pm whilst a chap on the now horizontal ladder was in the process of putting up the discount sign on the corner of the building. A few businesses have tried to make a go of it from those premises, I wish them well in their latest venture, it's going to be difficult as every other shop along that stretch of London Road is either a takeaway or a cafe/restaurant.

I used that cafe for a few years when it was The Central. You couldnt get a parking space in London rd early in the morning for Gas board and Water board vans or Dover marquee, all in the cafe. How times have changed.

Who remembers the "Town Lounge", the cafe that is now the sex shop? I was told yesterday that the former owner Brian Povey died last week.

I knew Brian but i hadnt seen him for years.I remember the Town Lounge but i used it mainly when it became Sallys Cafe.My good friend Dougie used to run it then.Coming back to the former Central Cafe,i hope the new owners do well, but i think they will struggle.Theres so many Takeaways in such a small area.I know a few of their owners and there all finding it tough.People just cant afford it now.

The town lounge was run by my wife family at one time his name was Mick Masson. And her mum done all the cooking. It was well support then by the old Dover box factory and chair works which was just round the the next street by the river.

.............and today the Central Cafe aka the Istanbul is empty again. On the bright side, next door, formerly the plumbers, has had it's window replaced and people have been working in there.
MHK (56 London Road) have finally given up though.

Nice people, they have a 5 year lease. They have done lots of work on the building (which it needed and lots more to do !!!!). The mix of offerings they will be hosting is interesting, but let's face it, the mix of offering in that part of London Road is fairly eclectic these days, so I guess it actually enhances the offer and is good for Dover.
