CARNIVAL SPIRIT ALIVE AND WELL IN DOVER!
What can I say? The Committee and the Court of Dover would like to thank the people of Dover for their support for this years event. We have had a truly uplifting response from Dover Residents and Businesses alike.
To name but a few:
Dover Town Council Grants Committee have allocated Dover Town Carnival Ltd £1000 towards the running costs of The Court of Dover, they have also allocated £500.00 sponsorship for a float for The Court of Dover which will bear the Town Crest and £750.00 to pay for a marching band to take part in the Carnival itself on 3rd July 2011.
The White Cliffs Hotel and Guest House Group have sponsored all the Crowns for the new Court of Dover to be selected on 14th May 2011 at Bluebirds at a cost of £110.00.
P&O Ferries have sent 6 day trips and 1 standard return for use as raffle prizes.
Flying Fish Hovercraft have sent 2 vouchers worth £75.00 each to be used as raffle prizes.
Various shops and businesses throughout the Town Centre have given raffle prizes for use at the Selection and Carnival Events, these shops will be recognized by the Selection posters in their windows as of 2nd April 2011.
KOS Media have sponsored Dover Town Carnival to collect for the Carnival and promote the Event at the Travel and Leisure Show on 13th March at Dover Cruise Terminals and we hope that this will bring many more people into Dover for Regatta and Carnival weekend.
Posters on Dover Forum have come together to offer their services and materials in order to build the float this year, which we hope to get started on now we have the funds in place.
The residents of Dover and in particular regulars at Dover Athletic FC have given generously to our collections and we are extremely grateful for the support and the Carnival Spirit which is so clearly still alive here in Dover.
The Court of Dover 2010 will be in the Town Centre on 2nd & 3rd April to promote the Selection Event, anyone interested in entering can also download information from our website www.dovertowncarnival.co.uk. - 10 March 2011 12:3096245In addition to the above, I would like to add that at the Travel and Leisure Show on Sunday 13th March, Dover Town Carnival Ltd will be actively promoting both Crabble Corn Mill and Western Heights Preservation Society from the Carnival Stand.
The girls will be on Stand 33 and if any of you are attending please pop round and say hello.

the idea of a marching band is to promote themselves do our queens get paid everything else is given free so why not this. - Jan Higgins

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

However, others work as a business it is what they do, just like booking a band for a wedding or a concert it is another gig to them. We usually try and cover expenses anyway even for bands like the Sea Scouts etc as they have to travel and are also a charitable organisation.
Majorette groups dont always take part for free either, they also have expenses to cover.
Lack of entertainment in the Carnival has always been one of the biggest criticisms and I would have expected a little enthusiasm from the general public and support. The Carnival is an Event, it is free for the people who attend to watch and it should be entertaining.
We are hopeful that this year the parade will be more than just a parade of queens and local floats and that Dover can start to look forward to their Carnival again.
The Carnival is not about people promoting themselves by taking part it is about providing an entertaining event for the people of the town.
If entertainment is your bread and butter would you take part in a different Carnival every weekend for free? If Carnival's were your promotional tools who would you charge for your services? Marching Bands train hard and travel some distance, if you take the £750.00 and divide it by the number of people in the band I think you will find that it isnt quite such a nice little earner.
I would be happy to sit down and go through our reasonings and accounts with anyone who wants more information, or you could come along to one of our meetings.

- 12 March 2011 13:2796623It wasnt a criticism Alan, I probably worded it wrong. What I meant was, I thought the public wanted more entertainment in the parade and this is what we are trying to do.
It is not our Parade it is Dover's parade and we will be guided by what the people of Dover want.
That is what we are about, please try and understand I have no wish to cause any bad feeling, I was just trying to explain why we went to the Council for entertainment money. We have also gone to other sponsors to pay for entertainment in the parade and the girls are working really hard to raise funds for the same.
I hope your grand daughter will enjoy the parade, maybe she would like to take part all it takes to enter and walk the parade is fancy dress! Sorry if I caused you any offence.

readers will be interested to know of any event. - 12 March 2011 14:0696629The girls will be in Town on 2nd and 3rd April promoting their Selection in May and Carnival in July, they will also be assisting Country Brides in Town on 16th April promoting and collecting for The Royal British Legion.
Tomorrow the girls will be at The Travel & Leisure Show promoting their Carnival, Western Heights Open Weekend and Crabble Corn Mill with 4500 visitors expected we are hoping to get a good response.
Not seen any posters yet but it could be "other Dover" as their selection is in April !!!
Will definately be keeping you all informed though.

Loren Selby who is a European Princess and Deputy Dover Queen
It was the people mentioned above and of course the current court who were instrumental in bringing about the new Company and saving Dover Carnival in 2010.
I came on board much later.
Hope to see some of you down at the cruise terminals today.
