13:3869946Ross, you can add Cyprus, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and Iraq/Kuwait to the list. All except the Spanish/Moorish conflicts have British fingerprints all over them. In most cases the locals in those countries can point their fingers at us and say, with some justification: 'you started it'.

15:2869951It's not about faith, or even religion, it's about power, control and ignorance. Burning books is an act of barbarism, but then so is incitement to hatred, and the press manage that one without too much challenge. If the press hadn't broadcast the potential burning to the globe that pastor would have remained the head of a less-than-50-strong "church" and that would be that. Incidentally, I don't recall Hilary Clinton et al getting on their hind legs to condemn any of the flag-burning/fatwa pledging/death-threatening Islamist extremists in the US or the UK as loudly or as vehemently as they are condemning this little pastor in the backwoods. And that imbalance is partly what leads to people feeling let down and betrayed.

10:4670256Just to illustrate the hypocrisy and ignorance of many 'religious' people in the Islamic world: I was once on a plane back to Riyadh from the Far East and found myself sitting in first class next to a Saudi gentleman whom I knew slightly from the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, where he was their religious adviser. He was returning from a long weekend in Bangkok and he regaled me with lurid tales of what he had been up to. I asked if that was not somewhat at odds with his day job and he explained patiently to me that God can only see what goes on in Saudi Arabia not Thailand and anything he did outside the Kingdom did not count.

11:1970264I had better not name names, but a priest around Dover a few years ago whilst I worked in the community the local hall was looking at allowing a seonce(not sure if correct spelling)
where you m,ay speak to those departed.
The priest who was also a member and trustee objected, so before the meeting I spoke with him on how best to get results.
Sadly on the evening in question he didnt listen to a word I said!!!!
I told him, within the community there were;
Atheists/ non commital/ and believers
and to get the majority on board the best way is to have reasons debate.
and not preach to p;eople or they will switch off.
When it came it came to his turn to speak he pulled out a bible from under the table and did no more than preach to all around the table.
It ended up with a big big row, sadly at that time the community and church did work closely together, but this meeting ended with the vicar walking out and resigning followed by two of his 2 supporters.
i, with others had to spend the next few years trying to re build relationships with the community/church, which thankfully is in back in place.
Also had the vicar stayed he would also have found out that the seonce didnt get voted through anyway.
But this is the same vicar that when i went to his gathering and 8 couples were present,
one couple said to the vicar in a very innocent manner in discussion;
"Whats the difference between catholics and the church of England?"
To which his wife replied (who was not part of the meeyting)
"We are right and they are wrong"
I asked the vicar if he shared that view to which he agreed
I Knew from that point on I was in the wrong place lol
Thankfully, not through my doing, that vicar was moved away very soon after

17:4570324The problem that the catholic church has with seance's is that they believe that the only spirits one can gain contact through mediums and seances are the strong evil ones as those spirits have a reason to disturb life on earth.Those spirits at peace and in heaven have no good reason for ever wanting to return to this 'hell on earth'.
