Regarding Ray's caption, Bob says there were 'wartime bodies' found in the Market Square under buildings rubble - so this was partly appropriate !!

not heard that about the promenade sarah, though in my view it deserves one.
apparently there was an old burial site there where the skeleton was found.

not forgetting the seasports centre that has won awards and acclamation far and wide.
Do we know as yet who/why the skeleton is there?
Makes me wonder if it is from the archaeological dig many years ago. All very interesting.

Terry, the question you pose is likely not to be answered (my own personal opinion), as to find out more would probably mean ripping up Market Square, possibly to find a few skeletons hidden in the cupboard.
I doubt the Council would sanction such conduct for reasons of costs, so I reckon a parson will come and express a prayer and organise a burial to the unknown person, possibly someone who lived thousands of years ago.
Thats a shame but of course would be costly Alexander.
When I am next volunteering down the Roman Painted House in a few weeks I will see what Brian Philp knows in case he did some work in the area as it would be nice to know if the remains of St Martin Le Grand's graveyard extended that far over. Always nice to find some new piece of history, especially as I believe not much was found in the DTIZ area. All very interesting. There is a skeleton and his lead coffin on display at the Painted House - he came from St Martin Le Grand so makes me wonder if the new skeleton is of someone so high in status or of the same period/area. Of course though we may never know.

My guess is that the skeleton would date to a time prior to the institution of Market Square. It could be associated to St Martin le Grand, but would likely have been in some form of case.
The area used to be part of the port, prior to Saxon times, so it could be the result of a misfortune, someone falling into the water.
