My first wife was borne and brought up in Tottenham; when I started going out with her she was too embarrassed to show me where she lived - in a slum flat that was pulled down as soon as her and her Mum and Dad moved out and went to live in a flat in Broadwater Farm.
It was brand-new, January 1971 I think it was when the first families moved in. A little old Lady who had been her (my first wife's) neighbour in Tottenham, moved there too and in the first week she was beaten up in the lift by a black kid and robbed of just a few pennies. She died a few days later, they never caught her attacker.
It is an urban jungle round there, no doubt about it.
Her attacker would not have been offended if you (anyone) had called him what Bob is being accused of - why should we be ?
Jan, most of those colours you mention would be much less offended than we are - why is that do you think ? Why are we offended on their behalf ?

John, your words "most ethnic minorities live in the poorest and most underprivileged areas of this country" is astonishing!
I think one would have to go to a dark room and take a deep breath.
Are you joking?
John!

Roger, are you inferring that some of those of the various colours I mentioned do not mind when those of us who are white are referred to in derogatory racist terms.
Quite often it is often not the words themselves it is the context or the way they are said.

Sorry Jan, I thought that sentence was quite unambiguous; reading it again, it still seems that way:
"most of those colours you mention would be much less offended than we are - why is that do you think ? Why are we offended on their behalf ?"

jan h
i understand your frustration you have tried to explain.
i understand why you wish to give up
but im concerned some leading conservatives still find these and other comments made by bob to be acceptable)(even bob himself removed the comments)
i worry for the outcome of the local conservative party enquiry if they hold the same view as its leading members on this forum

I'm beginning to see how the next General Election will be fought here in Dover and Deal.
It seems Bob's deleted comment will never be deleted, but will be the high-lights of the anti'Tory campaign, and that his apology will never be accepted, that no punishment will ever be enough.

I'm not a leading Tory and my comments and views are personal not political.
I believe a very wrong decision has been made by his school and if the local Conservatives make a similar decision I will be very disappointed in them too.
A massive mountain out of a little molehill has been made and no one is the winner, apart from those with a political motive, the PC brigade and those who feign offence on behalf of those who are not offended.
A sad day indeed for us honkies/snowdrops/whities, or whatever we are.

JAN;
Sadly jan looks like yourself and roger will never agree on this subject
ROGER;
you cannot hide behind the fact of your position as a cllr./torymember etc
and of course your a leading member
your views can often be political (and no problem with that) but suddenly on this subject it becomes a personal comment? how confusing
i suspect you feel the decision may well go against bob in your local party.
bob did the right thing, he removed the racist offensive comments
he also came to a mutual agreement with the school(Othe school didnt push him) to leave the school, only right with the m,ake up of the school, would have been difficult for some pupils to have related to him, worse how they would feel in his company obviously local politicians will fight this out
but there are a number of posters on here who would usually lean more towards your own right wing views on things, that are also saying bob was wrong.
and lets not forget tht it was a conservative, yes a conservative, who set the ball rolling in reporting bob. thats seems to have been forgotten

I understand he maybe sorry for what he put at a moment of loose thinking but sadly he held a high teaching job and what he put was in public, like many have said teaching is for everyone and names like that are not aceptable
Whatever anyone thinks of the comments I suppose if you step into a role in politics - which is what a councillor has done - things do change a bit. Not that I would want to curb anyones thoughts or beliefs - the Thought Police! - but that perhaps one needs to understand the audience better.

well once the local conservative parties makes there decision to
1; be happy to keep bob even with those past remarks
2; exclude him from the party
then we can all move on

you can be sure that it will be brought up at the next election, each party resorts naturally to smearing the other.
whether it is in election leaflets or a nudge nudge statement on the doorstep.

howard;
how are yer bruv???????
you do have to look past all the politics of it
and think with the past and present comments
would you be happy to;
1; send your child(who may be one of the many differing cultures in the school)
knowing bobs views
2; want your elected member as your rep when you know there not the views
you share and likely to offend.
as v said earlier, a one off people may we'l understand, but there were many and this was the last of them.
im getting the creeping feeling that the local tory party is hoping to sweep this under the carpet
the only thing with that is that it will only fuel the other parties to keep the issue going right up to the next election.
better to take swift action.
but thats there call
