We don't have anything like that in Dover as you know Paul - not sure how well it would do here.

If everything was a pound or going to charity Roger, they would do very well.

It's quirky enough to do ok , providing the rental economics add up. Plenty of tourists to make the difference in the right location. Can't afford to be seasonal. A bit of market research might help an investment opportunity.

Now Sid what does that mean about confidence in the Dover economy or consumer profile?
Are you willing to invest?

Sid , where are you?

Just been over to the Beeb site for the latest news. To answer your question, I am not willing to invest hard earned money into a sinking ship.

The replica car was outside PaulW, and I was going to take a picture of it. A shop like this would be a boon in Dover, especially in one of those empty building`s in the Market Square. I can`t quite put my finger on what makes Deal so attractive. It certainly always looks clean and tidy. I`d invest in it.

Paul, I have no choice over how you or any other politician invest my taxes, except once in a blue moon at election time. But, since I got back from Nigeria (dec09) the DTIZ project has collapsed, Churchills Hotel has closed, but we are getting a wavey wall on the seafront. If that rates as investment in our future well, I need to read another dictionary for a few definitions because clearly I don't understand the meaning of the word.
The Buckland Mill site is still showing a banner of lies from SEEDA about what is coming (don't forget I've been in Nigeria from 2007-very late 2009, and there has been NO visible change on that eyesore, NONE. THe MFI building, and exNight Club in Castle Street, the Tax Offices, th parade of ex-shops on the seafront, THe Britannia pub closed and so it goes on. But, as I said, we are getting a wavey wall.
As for what makes Deal attractive Colin, well, it doesn't have umpteen supermarkets dragging footfall away from the High Street to the same extent we do in Dover and that allows for a higher retail survival rate there.

I think there is a point though in Sid's comment about over supply of supermarkets here.
One supermarket would affect a small butchers, fish shop, cheese, bread and cake shop; we have Morrisons, Somerfield, M & S, Aldi, Nettos, Farm foods, Iceland and some convenience stores.
They can only survive/thrive through offering good service and quality.

That's Middle St, Colin.
Plenty of London weekenders & second homes.

Do we have any London weekenders or second homes here Paul, or is it just Deal preferred? And is Sandwich popular in that respect too, as it`s similar looking to Deal? I must say, that I`ve been to Deal more in the past 10 months, than the whole of my life, and I`m very impressed with the town.

i enjoy it there colin, the streets and houses near the seafront are wonderful.
sorry to hear the fuhrer saying that they are not proper homes.
sandwich is great too in my opinion, it gets called boring, no idea why.

Sandwich was reputed to have more millionaires per sq. yard than most areas in the UK.
JHG may want to comment.

Colin , I am sure Dover and it's outskirts does.
But then you also have the commuters like Bern travelling afar.

commuters are a vastly different thing from the weekenders and second homers.
