16:2835515Bern! Unbelievable. I was in town today for some last minute bits and a seafront walk. My itinary included a golliwog search. That curiosity shop had some hand sewn collector`s examples for £32 odd, but I tried the BHF shop as well, and there he was on the lower shelf for £2.50! Bought him about 12.30ish today. Were you in there today? I took him down to the watersports centre for a picture, but still having camera probs.

18:0035534that is indeed a classic golly, £.2. 50 is a snip.
mind you, looking at the expression on his face, looks like he has just had the snip.

18:0235536Couldn`t have been far apart in time. Have to meet you all sometime. I took a picture of him at the watersports centre, but it downloaded with a gap through the middle. Having this camera problem. I should have snapped two and then I would`ve got one.

19:1835549What a lovely Golli - if I'd have known about it I would have bought it.
How can anyone say such a lovely doll is offensive ?
A good purchase Colin.
By the way Bern, what's it like having a brush by the knick-knacks - does it hurt or tickle ?

20:5835559The doll isn't offensive Roger! ...it's a doll! It's only the meaning applied to it that CAN be offensive.
If you give a bunch of roses to your mother it doesn't mean the same as if you give them to your girlfriend (unless of course you have some kind of Freudian disorder).

DT1 "Obviously collecting badges from jars of marmalade is not racist, however the very conception of Golliwogs was."
So, are you suggesting Robertson's had a racist intent when they conceived the idea of Golliwog badges?
BTW, my Chairman in Nigeria referred to his local workers as "monkeys". Quite racist I thought, but black man re black men, I wonder?

Blacks have aways (appeared to us whites to have) been more racist to other blacks than whites have; like tribes are always more nasty to other tribes.
Too much racist nonsense is talked about Golliwogs.
Good Gollies Colin.

Of course not Sid, otherwise I would have said "...however the conception of Golliwog Badges was".
"Blacks being more rascist to other blacks" Roger, this is getting crazy! That's like saying "women are more sexist to other women, than men are". All black people are doing are changing the meaning and context. The word 'niger' in rap music being a good example, taking an oppressive term and confusing it's meaning and so confusing the very mindset of those that use it disparagingly. This is great and I think funny because some people can't get their heads around it.
Having never met your Chairman Sid or been to Nigeria it is impossible for me to comment on, I certainly call my own children little monkeys all the time, perhaps you are more hung up on this than your chairman.
As I say it's all about context, things don't have to be offensive, but can be made so, even if they are the same word or symbol. It's the meaning we apply. eg: I call my Dad a D**k-Head and he does to me, people see this as funny, endearing and an expression of our close relationship. Now if I call you the same name on here in response to your views, the same word takes on a different meaning.
The same is true for golliwogs, people do find them rascist and thought about in certain contexts they are. So people have had to think about the best way to deal with this, sometimes by removing them ie Enid Blyton books, Robertson's jars. By liking toys or badges does not make you rascist (kids don't care), but the iconography is based on rascist ideas and that's the fact.

Thanks Colin. Some of the stuff on the top shelf is quite good, probably modern reproductions of the original Robert Opie stuff from the 40s and 50s, but of interest nonetheless. The Golly dolls are not much cop, tbh, they are mass produced in Taiwan, and not very collectable, but I would be interested in one of the boxed mugs bottom left, I haven't seen those before. Which shop was this display in?
The thimbles are also reproductions. The originals were made for Robertson's and fetch huge prices today, despite the recession. Some of the rarer ones can go for thousands of pounds.
True friends stab you in the front.

Andy, it`s that olde worlde shop in the high street in Deal town centre, Fudger and something? A reproduction wireless playing old tunes, musty smell, numerous old signs and much more, including many original photo`s. Lovely shop to browse round. I spent hundreds of pounds in there Friday, (mentally of course).

Mummery & Fudger is the name, great quirky shop. They have a great replica green delivery van with a black top. As eccentric as the shop. One of the features of Deal High St.
