Kath, I was thinking of the rabbit and pigeon shoots that used to happen when we were in the village rather than the big organised Winter game shoots.
Journalist license perhaps making the proverbial mountain out of a molehill.

Strange but true. When you live in the countryside people shoot the wildlife, sometimes to eat, sometimes for "sport". Hereabouts, October shoots echo round the village, landrovers loaded with the hunters and their dogs are a part of the landscape and big money changes hands. All part of the rural economy.

Mountain out of a Molehill?
Time for a Headline competition...
"Unfrog-edible", "Unfrog-gettable"
These both suffer from the fact that the pigeons are both 'gettable' and eaten. Ah!...
"Coo-coo to chew!"
[Back to the coffee pot, perhaps?]
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Shooting wood pigeons on agricultural land is regarded as pest control and allowed under a general licence from DEFRA - they just happen to be tasty too!

What is abhorrent to some is a rural sport to others, at least their sport provides them with food and as Ray says pigeon is very tasty as is rabbit, pheasant, partridge and duck.

Oh yes, Jan, there are a 'few' people shoot for rabbits etc. and there is a gun club here. I am sure many use what they bag, for food for themselves or their animals.
Pigeon pie can be quite tasty!

Keith, I can't remember where this vaguely remembered quote came from, but I'm sure you'll disagree
"The only true sports are those where a quarry is pursued - hunting, shooting, fishing and courting, everything else is a game."

If you look at my post again you will see the word sport is in inverted commas.
