French visitors turning Kent into 'Wild West'
"The Kent village of Tilmanstone has been compared to 'the Wild West' following an influx of pigeon shooters from across the Channel.
The French gunmen have arrived in increasing numbers to shoot English pigeons and sell them on back in their home country.
But the sudden increase in shots being fired around the quiet village has caused complaints from residents.
"These French visitors are causing a danger to the public," said Dover District Council member Mog Ovenden.
"I find it repulsive and disgusting that they come to our fields with their guns, shooting across our footpaths and frightening horses."
Tensions over the arrival of the French pigeon shooters have heightened following an incident in which an 18-year-old rider was injured after being thrown from her horse.
The animal was apparently startled by a nearby gunshot.
"The 18-year-old woman fell off her horse," said a police statement. "She has not made any complaints but said she remembers hearing a bang before she fell.""

My version of the story - I know no more than what was in the paper, I dont know who the rider or the man shooting pigeons was. I will keep my ears open ! There are a lot of pigeons around here, as everywhere.

Thanks Kath, if it was a serious problem for the village I was sure you would know.
Maybe the DDC Councillor is anti shooting.

Is this so much different from the reported sighting of an 'armed man' on the platform at Priory station?
Maybe any sudden increase in the granting of licences should be more widely reported?

This sudden interest in our pigeons by the French should be a cause for concern. The pigeons flying around and leaving their calling cards everywhere is bad enough; imagine what would happen if they cross bred them with the frogs and snails that they have a penchant for consuming.
Pigeons sliding up your cabbage stems Mr Matcham and others 'hopping' onto buses!

Sacre bleu! It doesn't bear thinking about.

Do nothing and nothing happens.

I wonder if it was one of the organised shoots that used to happen in the area when we lived in the village.
BTW, I should have said welcome to Bob and his obvious sense of humour earlier I do beg his forgiveness.

Years ago when I was on the DTC I said they should cull the pigeons outside the office, you might have seen it in the local press at the time,I was geting hate mail for weeks after, one just letter said"We should get rid of Vic Matcham because the pigeons have been around longer.

Jan - the regular shoots each November are for the pheasants the gamekeeper breeds.
This was several French people who come over to shoot on the landowner's land. I dont know how often or how many.
I was told this morning that the story had been reported out of all proportion !
