some of you will have already seen this but I thought I would put it on the forum any way, sums up a lot of feelings I think.
Taken from The Queens Royal Lancers web site.
Goodbye to my England, so long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish,Irish or Welsh thats fine
But don't say your English, thats way out of line.
The French and the Germans they may call themselves such
So may Norwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say your English - Ever again.
At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
in Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.
Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils don't learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings, Arnem or Mons
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons
We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea
We're the English from England, lets all be proud
Stand up and be counted - Shout it out loud
Lets tell our Government and Brussels too
We're pround of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of St George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK!!!!!

Andy, Like always you hit the nail on the head.

Whatever the virtues of the sentiment the poem doesn't scan.
It keeps on changing from 11 to 10 syllables a line.
Perhaps the writer should have spent more attention during 'English' at school!

the fact is there is no political party that would give england its own parliament or take us out of the united kingdom.
we are a forgotten tribe in england.

Howard - no English Parliament due to extra costs and yet another layer of interfering Government.
But what instead about English votes for English laws. A Council of all England in the Westminster Parliament that excludes Scottish and Welsh MPs from voting on matters that are devolved to their parliaments in their home countries. That wil rebalance the constitution but Labour, who depend on Scottish MP will not introduce that.
Ken Clarke produced some proposals with his Constitutional Task Force and I am hopeful that this will be included in the manifesto.
None of that would be necessary Barry if the stupid 'buggers' in power hadn't cow-towed to the separatist extremists of our colonies!

interesting thought barry, i will check out the ken clarke document.
mind you, i think the idea of a united kingdom is outdated now, all over europe larger countries have dissolved into smaller units.

And those smaller units have merged into one big federalist state, now known as the EU.

you have created a good discussion point ian, we can be independent and still friends with scotland wales and northern ireland.
a good example is czechoslovakia, they broke into 2 but the peoples of both countries are still so close that very many got together and moved to dover.
"Perhaps the writer should have spent more attention during 'English' at school".
Perhaps the teachers could have made it more interesting for the pupils?
"the idea of a united kingdom is outdated now", so, does that apply to the EU too?

of course it does sid, i have been banging on here for ages about monolithic institutions with no control from the inmates.
the fall of yugoslavia and the soviet union sums it all up.
the northern league in italy want seperatism, corsica, sardinia even majorca are looking to a future independence.
that is just off of the top of my head, there must be many other.
