ANDREW;
Church's
-----------
I think howard is correct church numbers in most places are falling, this is probably as you know for many reasons, such as
church not inviting
church preach to much (some)
church unable to listen
church unable to change its ways
church unable adapt to todays society.
church not seen as helpful or relevant to todays society
PUBS;
They i'm sure find it hard to survive in todays climate, and the small local pub
unable to compete with thre big chains
pubs ar not as inviting as they used to be.
from time to time in ventures out i choose my pubs, i dont want a crowded pub
of 18 year old fighting to get to the bar so i tend to go the bars with less people for a relaxing evening.
I think again howard is right.
In general the republic of priory area has always been the loser, sadly, we can only look and hope for the future

People have changed their habits so no longer use their local for a quick pint. I am sure this is because it has become so expensive so a trip to the pub is now included in places to go for 'an evening out' so people go out of the local neighbourhood.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

that will never happen alex, church attendance seems to be in terminal decline.
just as an example localy, we had 2 unitarian churches at one time and doing good business.
then one closed and was sold off for redevelopment, last time i went past the other one it advertised services every second sunday.

Actually Howard that's incorrect. Catholic church attendances are growing after an influx of Polish nationals to the UK. Also the Telegraph ran an article a while back stating that England is fast becoming a Catholic country as more Anglicans defect to the Catholic church.
We went to mass two weeks ago and got there half an hour before kick off only to find the church packed (1000 plus) and I was forced along with others to stand through the service. The girls managed to squeeze into one of the pews.
But it's not everyones cup of tea and each to their own.
Sorry I should qualify that by saying that the island is full of Portuguese.Poles and Irish nationals hence the good attendance figures.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

i agree about the catholics for the reasons you have given, but there are few people suddeny becoming believers.
as you say refugees from the anglican communion and immigrant from strongly catholic countries are responsible for the figures.
however church of england, baptist, methodists, sally army and others are reporting a steady downturn over a nunber of years.

Thanks for your comments on my question, keith et al.
It was really rather a rhetorical one as of course we all have our own feelings about the subject.
The loss of old community buildings is a physical manifestation of a decline in community spirit and social cohesion, in my view. Loneliness, fragmentation and alienation are rampant forces in the geographical expression known as England.
