some good news for a change, just been informed that the above eyesore has been bought at auction by a friend of a friend.
cetainly plenty of work that needs to be done on it.
ironically it is another toilet closure, it was used in an unofficial capacity by the inhabitants of a house 2 doors from me until they moved.
Wheres that Howard ? Tower Hamlets ? , the building looks familiar but I have no sense of direction

It looks like it used to be a church once!

It was a church and the church hall was at the back of the building, when I lived up there in the late 40s 50s it was still a church and one I went to. As I said before I lived in Westbury Rd for over 40years.

That's good news Howard, thanks.
I haven't seen the planning application come through yet though.

i was wondering about that roger, i have only the scantest of details, my initial reaction was there would be a conversion of the existing building.
whether permission would be given for demolition and new build i have no idea about.
at least it is a start though.

fully updated now, it was purchased with planning permission for 4 flats, so the original outer building will stay.
the builder concerned has done work in my place and is a craftsman, so all in all a result.

There won't be 106 money for 4 flats Keith - too small a development.

It has nothing to do with being forgotten Keith - you know that. You can't squeeze 106 money for 4 flats where ever they are.

Sad that the cornerstones of our heritage, building-wise, i.e. church and pub, are in particularly sharp deciine in the Priory Ward. Anyone care to speculate on the reasons why?

i think both are in decline everywhere, churches tend to amalgamate where they can.
pubs will soon be the preserve of big chains and the odd one that can offer good food or something extra.

The loss of pubs in the Priory/Maxton area is particularly marked: The Engineer, The Renaissance, Hare & Hounds, Orange Tree, Westbury... all within a small area in a few years.
A churches or a pub has usually existed for centuires. Once gone they are never replaced.
