As announced at our 'do' this evening three of our young members are carrying out an amazing (mad?) feat of climbing the Grand Shaft staircase on the 7th April to the equivalent of MOUNT EVEREST between them !! It is to raise money for the Western Heights Preservation Society to enable us to replace stolen tools and the creation of a dry secure tool store inside the Fort to ensure that our excellent volunteers can continue the good work that is carried out up there which enable our Open Days to take place.
If people would like to sponsor the girls we have set up a just giving page and we hope to see people on the day to come along and support them

How many times do they have to go up and down Paul - and is it estimated how long it will take ?
It's OK, with the aid of a magnifying glass, I have determined it is 70 times. When do they start practicing ?
I'll start off by donating a fiver.

Thanks Roger
Shame there hasn't been more comments on this - the three girls, Tess, Kelly and Sam are our youngest members and work extremely hard on our work parties and a badgering us to do even more - there seems no stopping them !!
This will also tie in with us opening up the Grand Shaft more this year. It will be open on the 3rd Sunday of the month 11am til 4pm from April to September, plus the July/October open weekends and Heritage Open Days in September
Been nice knowing you :)

I think those girls are mental! Soo pleased though as they are soo lovely. They always check with us in the ditch on the open weekend that we dont need anything and i know they are always there :)
I shall be there at some point to cheer them on!!

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Gosh yes that is a big ask for the three girls. Is that okay to do that..oh dear..it sounds very very tough, you will need a medic on hand just in case.
Paul I will put a few squids your way, not on the website, but will give it to you somewhere soon. We will be having a few drinks in Blakes soon.

Thanks Paul - the girls are in training and one is at Welbeck Defence College so it should be easy :)
We are just getting sorted with the non-web donation form so we will make sure we to see people as we can claim a further 25p in the £ Gift Aid from UK taxpayers if they fill out the declaration

A few figures:
The Grand Shaft is 140ft.
Everest is 29,000 ft.
This means to scale the height of Everest, the Grand Shaft will have to be climbed 210 times.
The girls will be doing a relay so that's 70 times each.
They are really looking forward to this and really want to raise some money for WHPS. So please give them all the support you can! They are mad and very brave!
(Me and Paul will supervise from the bottom.)

The girls are starting their training this weekend at the Shaft, so good luck to them !!
Just to put this into context of how much of a challenge it is, the Height they will climb is slightly less than the Three Peaks Challenge (which is the highest mountains in England, Wales and Scotland) in 24 hours

Wow they are very brave. I am glad they are doing a lot of training. How long do you think it will take them to do the relay?

Well have a good idea after the training sessions Claire - they will walk at the same time rather than relay to cover the distance

Have you thought of getting some form of sponsorship from local businesses? Maybe in return for a modicum of advertising?

Thanks Ross, that is a good idea - the main problem is all of our committee have full time jobs and most aren't local so getting time to follow up ideas like this is quite difficult

We'll see how we get on expecially when we hit the press
