21:0090898It alway surprises me some of the images of the Admiralty Pier from days gone by with the ships berthed both sides of the pier - knowing how rough it can be inside, what would it be like there !!
Been nice knowing you :)

09:1090933That is fascinating. The far side of Admiralty Pier from where Im sitting right now, the ocean going side if I can put it that way, gets amazingly rough. There seems to be a stretch of water there that goes berserk even in a moderate blow. Ive seen waves powering over this outer pier on wild days. You couldnt even consider standing on the pier in safety on wild days.
I notice there is plenty of wooden 'buffeting' beween pier and ship in top shot. I say buffeting as I dont know the proper term for it. But clearly they gave that berthing idea up as a lost cause.

My ancestor was staying at a hotel at the end of Admiralty Pier on the census night of 1861. He was a Travelling Station Master for the SER company. The building was between the Lord Warden and Pier Head (where the Deputy Harbour Master was). The census says Custom Hotel but no-one in any of the historical societies seems to have heard of it. I'm inserting an image of the census form. Any clues?

Thank Vic. Of note the Bishop of London was at the Lord Warden that night. He became the Archbishop of Canterbury. You can just see his name on that cut I posted. His name was Archibald Tait. Look him up in Wikepedia.

Brian - he probably helped build Dover castle too

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Couldn't do it without help though Jacqui as he was busy sorting out the Port of Dover Ferries and trains at the same time.
You've got to give him top marks for his entrepreneurial skills!
(I wish he had the time to write his life story)......it would be riveting!
