11:1316209Just have to respond here .Dont need the asprins Brian .Everyone assumes we councillors live it up at Whitfield .On Monday i had my breakfast at 7.00am arrived at Whitfields 10.00am and sat through two meetings until 1 30pm .At one stage i had to leave for a couple of minutes to search for a biscuit There wasnt any to be seen .One cup of coffee until i got back into Dover at 2.00pm .
Bern the local councillor is Cllr Collor all the rest of the cabinet members live in Deal or the rurals .
I do see the bigger picture .Have you read Dover Society Comments and Canterbury Councillors comments .
Pop into some of the shops in Cannon Street and hear what they say .

11:2816211What shops Sue? What has your experiences at council meetings and the lack of digestive biscuits got to do with the proposed big screen, take your own biscuits with you.
Canterbury Councillors deal with Canterbury not Dover District their particular circumstances might be totally different to ours and as for the Dover Society they really sound like a body that hasn't even realised television has been invented.
Sue don't fob us off with the hard life of a councillor answer some of the points that have been raised on this issue.

12:4316217What Shops .The few quality shops in Dover .The Curiosity Shop ,the Art Shop ,The gents outfitters and Childrens shoe shop Neat Feet .THe banks ,the Green Room .My Hairdresser Upper Cut ,just a few .
Most people who raise objections would be ok if it was for a few months .I think you will find that Dover Society has a very high membership .There are some very intelligent people on their committeee,
Of course it is important to know wht Canterbury Council members said They know not to mix Quality with tack .
By the way this issuie will be discussed at Full Council next Wednesday .
I was only answering the comments re the food we are supposed to get at DDC

13:2916221You still fail to address the issues I raised in my post 50.
Interesting reading about The Dover Society, it appears upon their own admission that they are all of advancing years and would TRY and look at the issue impartially.
As for mixing quality with tack that is your opinion and certainly does not reflect the decision of your cabinet.
You are in a minority Sue, thank god.

13:5516225I might be in a minority with my cabinet members but other councillors are also against it .I prefer class and quality not tack .If you believe this is the answer to lack of shops and quality ones at that ,then dream on my friend .By the way I have been away from this site just delivered leaflets and walked round the delightful Kearsney Abbey where the lake is gradually encroaching on to the grassed area as DDC cannot afford to maintain it .Then Im in the minority as long as we pander to those who drink outside pubs and enjoy sport .

14:4416231what amazes me is the big inner cities with problems far greater and more complex than Dover seem to manage and cope quite well with having large screen tv's in their town centre so why can't we?Maybe its because they have councillors that are able to assess the situation and are able to foresee any problems that may arise and therefore take preventitive action. The BBC use these live links for a multitude of events..lets go live to leeds...and therefore you see the mix ethnic townsfolk enjoying themselves usually raising money for Pugsy bear or comic relief so why should Dover miss out.
Sue if the Market Sq is a problem why not relocate it to Pencester Gardens.
Surely it will improve our chances of staging the arrival of the olympic torch on its procession to London or maybe the council don't want that either due to fire risks and yobbo's throwing vodka on the lighted torched to give it a bigger flame...
Why should the majority of dovorians lose out purely because there is a small risk that a few *issheads may try and interrupt the proceedings or that the few local residents object to the noise of living smack bang in the town centre.
Please someone get a grip...the bus to beachy head is nearly full only a few seats left,Book now to avoid disappointment and another boring summer in Dover.
We could always shell out another £5k to Gloria Chargeenough to open the dog and cat *issing contest.

16:3116253Marek, When they put the big screen into Trafalger Square (for special events - not as a permenant fixture) they never suggest removing the fountains to make room for it.
The location was decided by the olympic committee offering the screen and I am unaware of them being willing to consider alternatives.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

16:3716255Absolutely Marek, I would liked to have put up for the Council but after some thought realised that I was too damn old and that maybe my age might cloud my judgment on some issues.
I haven' quite got to the stage where I would tell people what is good and what is bad for them I am all for giving anything, within reason, a chance if it is going to liven up the town and encourage people here, at the moment there is very little.
If you worry about doing anything because of a few louts, then we might as well all pack our bags because this town which we are passionate about will slowly die.

I never raised the issue of the fountain in my posting above but I take your point. The effects of staging the olympics on our youngsters can only be a positive one.
Speaking personally my daughter is having her first game of netball tonight and spends about 15 mins on dry mornings running up and down the promenade. When I asked her why she wanted me to time her runs she answered " cos I'm in training for the 2012 olympics Dad! get a grip!!"
She's only 9yrs but is looking forward to watching it unfold on the big screen wherever and if ever the council agree to place it.

17:2216261Sue, On your posting number 42 you mention the Three cooks in Market Square. A certain woman who recently left another OUTLET in Dover is now claiming she plans to re-open it.

17:3416264The Street Olympics may be coming to a street near you Marek,I have been asked to support the street atletics as they had down the Seafront last year in Tower Hamlets on Northbourne Avenue,I said bring it on,so hopefully if the Cllrs and the Officers agree it will be there.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

19:2316273Brian I totally agree with number 78 posting, however this is what is being bandered about Dover by the lady in question. She has told several people she plans to re-open it as a cafe, and she has also mentioned opening another shop in Ramsgate.
Probably all hot air, but would be nice for Sue to be able to clarify the palns for that particular shop, so that we can all rest easy
