Easter is always a problem with what they call the 'Easter getaway'.
I took a couple of walks along Townwall Street and into East Cliff on both thursday and friday and, as is said above, it was good at times and bad at others - didn't help much friday lunchtime when a truck lost its air at the Woolcomber junction lights.
Back in the late 60's, well before the by-pass and Jubilee Way were built and way-way before the dualled A20 went through town, we had bad weather all over Easter one year and all the traffic - then directed here by the old A2 through Lydden, Temple Ewell, etc, was 'stacked' in the small dual carriageway on Lydden Hill. The traffic then came through town with the nearside lanes along Buckland Avenue, Maison Dieu Road, etc temporary signed 'Docks Traffic Only' and the right hand lane signed 'Town Traffic'.
'Deep joy' even in those days - difficult to get to the Easter Monday event at Lydden Circuit - however, we have the better roads now, we have bigger ships, plus the tunnel, a much extended Eastern Docks and a much bigger overall problem. Interesting to note that the road into the Eastern Docks hasn't changed since those days.
Strangly enough, in front of me, half read, is a draft document called 'The Freight Action Plan for Kent' but what we really need is the funding to address these issues once and for all and that needs to be provided from the national purse.
