just to let you know the a 20 is/was at a stand still this afternoon, and no a sign of a copper on the western hieghts roundabout.if it wasent for millitry hill as an escape route aycliffe residents would be trapped in a bottle neck.wheather it was a lack of conmuication between dhb and kent police i couldnt tell you but looks likely.

We came through there about 5pm and no problems then, in fact it seemed very quiet I thought.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

it was thick with hgv's about then jacqui, all coast bound.
And the M20 was slow this evening - the Chunnel junction was stuffed up with no signs or advice to tourists or travelling people other than a slow police car making sure the traffic stayed slow. I saw a woman in a foreign car pleading with a copper for information/advice and just being waved on.

The traffic reports on the radio said that there had been "technical difficulties" at the tunnel which had caused traffic to back up onto the M20 for a while. When this happens there is a tendency for some freight traffic to head for the port instead.
It doesn't take much to overload the port if they're not prepared for it.

I think that is the problem - chaos can occur at the drop of the hat on the A20/M20
What is really needed is what they are planning in Ashford - there are some dodgy traffic lights on the ring road that are shortly going to be connected to CCTV so that they can be remotely controlled. Perhaps they need such a thing at the Avo roundabout should problems occur ?

What good would that do Paul, except to alert somebody of something that is patently obvious and they can't do anything about in any case. So you have a few hundred vehicles standing still on the A20 into the port - where is it going to go? It's already standing still and blocking everything from coming into or leaving the town.
Yesterday's problem was probably caused by the Channel Tunnel having difficulties. Problems up there can last from minutes to months - and you get no advanced warning except for routine maintenance schedules and safety checks overnight at weekends (which don't cause a problem).
As we've all learned over the years putting Stack into operation takes the best part of 24 hours and, on occasion, by the time it's in place it's no longer needed!

The mobile barrier used for Operation Stack is reportedly to be scrapped (more accurately the lease isn't going to be renewed) after only being used twice in four years at a cost of £2,500,000 -

How many spaces in a lorry park would that have gone towards buying? My quick estimate based what my ex employer used to reckon for each car parking space created is 120. Not a lot but it would help, especially if added to other funds that might be available.

The Port performed brilliantly yesterday in coping with the traffic that diverted to Dover because of the problem at the tunnel, the Police kept the traffic moving and roundabouts clear to allow the Town to function, well done Dover.

Eurotunnel always have "technical difficulties" at peak holiday times, half term etc or do they simply overbook?

Yesterday was simpler than that, a broken down train in the tunnel allegedly.

Yes there is still a backlog of trucks waiting to get off due still as far as we can tell to trouble at the Tunnel. Every so often both lanes get blocked, although generally it is just the inside lane with the trucks waiting. But all ships appear to be fully operational. Two P&O's and a DFDS in and loading as we speak.

Was at the Shaft most of the day and I think it is just sheer volume - one minute backed right up, the next cleared
