12:4870864Hmm, just rummaged on the KCC website to find out how many employees they have without success.
So, for arguments sake, let us assume 2000 (I suspect many more) employees.
£670,285 / 365 days per annum = £1836 per day
£1836 / 2000 employees = £0.92 each.
If KCC employs 4,000 staff that would reduce the £0.92 by 50%, assuming they all had mobile phones of course. But if that were the case, at £0.46 per person per day that is quite good as I pay £0.67 per day for my mobile.

15:0770891i have no actual figures but would think that the majority of k.c.c. staff are office or depot based therefore having no need of their mobiles.

16:0270899Exactly Howard.

The vast majority of the staff would not have a mobile.
I suspect those who do leave their offices and NEED a mobile, possibly abuse the system and make needless calls on expenses.

19:0370937Re Sid's point above - looking at the request they have 45,000 employees - don't forget this is KCC, schools, librarys, social services, parking, road maintenance. They have 6800 mobile phones
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/mobile_phones_6#incoming-106943
So recalculating that is quite a lot smaller at about £100 a year, which compared with mine is a lot less !!
Been nice knowing you :)

19:0470938Also they are likely to have a lot of Lone Workers and it is a policy that that HAVE to have a mobile phone for security,

19:0970940the 30,000 that work in schools would have no need for a mobile phone so that leaves about half of the remaining kcc staff having one.
most of them would be office based, the outdoor work is mainly done by contractors.

19:1070941Thanks Scotchie, fact make it easier to see how very reasonable the annual cost is.
A slight recalculation then for those who still want to look for something to have a go about:
£670,285 / 365 days per annum = £1836 per day
£1836 / 6800 units = £0.27 per day
If any of you smart arses can get a better daily rate for mobile phone usage I'd like to know about it please.
Thanks.

19:1570942Howard, Paul has already stated they have 6800 units, which is less than half the remaining staff (15,000) as you put it.
Why would school workers have no need of a mobile phone? Remember, there are no telephones in classrooms, so for emergencies it would make sense for teachers to have them.
Outdoor workers need to be contactable for emergencies too, or just for good communications, redirecting their efforts etc.

19:1970946Heard an interesting quote yesterday.
William Hague :
"The foreign office has a smaller budget than KCC." in defending his budget cuts.
Can't vouch for the exact phraseology but I think people will understand the enormity of KCC , staffing & its spend.

19:2270949£13,000 annual Councillor allowance to start with, more in special circumstances PLUS expenses! Not sure how many councillors, but add on the £10,000 they each get to fritter away each year and that alone adds up to a tidy sum ripe for savings/cuts, before axing services.
Will they rein themselves in first? No bets being taken here.

19:2670953KCC is MASSIVE - people don't really appreciate all of the services that they do !!
Think their budget is well over £2BILLION
Also as well as their 45000 staff, they will indirectly keep thousands more people in business - I know of many companies that wouldn't exist without the Council business
Been nice knowing you :)

19:3070957they are currently loooking at ways of cutting staff perks.
as things stand if an employee gets made redundant and then is redeployed in a lesser capacity they continue to get their original wage for 3 years.
also staff sell back some of their holiday entiltlement, this looks like being stopped.

Did i see the KCC chief exec wage was over £200,000?

21:3371011I work for KCC within a school, the first year I worked there the school paid a part of my mobile phone bill and I never misused or abused that, my second year I chose to get a mobile contract off my own back (part due to budget cuts) £8-50 a month is cheaper than what I was paying before top up and go.
Staff are given school mobiles for trips and the like but only used for emergencies.
I can't say that all schools do that.
Does that help anyone?

I am not savvy of senior staff and mobile phone bills.

00:027105484 councillors with a Blackberry, which will be heavily discounted if not given free by the network so they can get other revenues. No axe to grind there.
84 councillors costing a minimum of £1,932,000 PLUS expenses I do have a problem with.
So, nitpick over £670k and ignore £1.9m, smart thinking folks.

You will recall I have been as critical as yourself on the number of councils we have representing Dover, so please don't mis represent me.
