12:2410558Does anyone know IF or WHEN the 20mph speed limit will be imposed in built up areas?
A very serious accident happened on Frith road this morning, I don't know the full details even though I was on the scene, right in the middle of the rush hour a car mounted the pavement and knocked over a pupil and her Grandmother.
Looking at the state of the car and the wall it did'nt look as though the car was travelling slow.
Both pupil and Gran had serious injuries but not I believe life threatening.
Having worked at the DGGS for 5 months now it does make me wonder about some of the loonies that come flying round that bend at more than 40mph.
Are there any councillors out there that could look into this please before we have loss of life?

13:4210561Gosh thats a terrible tale there Ian. The prospect of a car mounting the pavement outside or near a school is very worrying indeed. Hopefully the victims will make a full recovery. What can you do...in theory your children should be safe on the pavement but one hears more and more about similar accidents. Its frightening.

14:1810563Ian I brought this up at Council recently that we want 20mph outside every school, especially the Barton Road and Frith Road,in fact I was attacked by someone in the newspaper Ian Taylor who said it will make things worse.I ride my bike past there everyday and the traffic needs slowing down, but the Joint Transportation Board have just passed 20mph limit outside 6 Schools but not this arae. There is a need for it and we will keep fighting for it.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

17:1410569Thanks for the info J.
The roads outside of Dover have been mentioned far too many times on the forums and in the local papers, deaths caused by speeding or careless driving.
We must try our hardest to keep it out of dover, especially near schools.
I wonder if PW or NC could help?
And just to let you all know, the pupil is ok and at home now but the Grandmother is still in Hospital and not too good. I'll keep you posted.

17:1910570Very sorry to hear that Ian.
Yes, there should be a 20 mph there - are you on the JTB John ? Nigel would be the one to ask, he would know if anything is in the pipeline.
Advance notices on Barton Road - before the bend, should be put up now; it must be obvious to a blind-man that there are a number of schools along here, so it should be natural to slow down.

17:2410571Well done John keep fighting for it.
I remember that letter and indeed many letters from Ian Taylor in the local paper. I dont know if he is from Dover or around or if he is a self appointed figure from afar, but he does seem to have the urge to legislate for us on all things motoring. It doesnt mean to say he is right. You might remember that government campaign that got the message out that "Speed Kills" and indeed it does. Slower is better. Less fatalities at 20mph for sure.

20:0810579does not mr taylor work for a "road haulage association" or something similar?
anyway getting back to the 20 mph in built up areas, cecil parkinson when he was at the department of transport recommended that.
not only would it reduce accidents, but survival rates would increase dramatically amongst those run over.

21:1410588We were passing there on our school run, it's always a bit of a battle coming off Connaught into the fray there by the Girl's Grammar.
But at that time of the morning (thankfully) the speeds are low due to sheer weight of traffic.
Could not agree more to a 20mph limit, as many children just burst across the roads to be with there mates on the other pavement etc.
Speed humps like on the approach to Astor etc would also help ease down the speed (even the 4WD beasties would have to slow at them).
Pleased to hear that the unfortunates are recovering, for all we could see in passing was blue lights and an immobile patient on a trolley.
My thoughts are with them.
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

21:1910590Its not just outside schools that we need a 20mph limit
We need it from the York St roundabout all the way up The High St & London Road, currently it is a bloody raceway for PFYs (pimply faced youths) and their sooped up fiestas (or what ever their ilk drive these days)

23:5410592Sadly, whenever people sensibly pressure for reductions in speed limits, drivers pressure groups (such as Ian Taylor's Association of British Drivers) always argue that speed is not the problem and then change the emphasis to signage. It will take a lot to convince the Clarkson fans of this world that it is possible to drive a car using all three pedals and not just the accellorator.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

00:0010595I'm a strong believer in 20mph speeds around all schools, and well done John for picking up on the issue so early.
off the starting blocks, well done john.
Of course there are those car users that will always want to race from A to B without thought for others.
Lets raise the campaign locally go for it JOHN
looks like in the main you have the support.

00:1510598In the words of a famous person. ( Huh that'll be the day )
This problem needs sorting out NOW.
Is this Ian Taylor some sort of pillock or what. BUILT UP AREAS LOW SPEED.
The idea is to get from A to B as safely as possible, NOT as quickly as possible.
The stop and start points from Cherry tree trafficc lights down to B&Q traffic lights just encourages people to drive faster.
Come on DDC get it sorted, I saw some very good first aiders doing their bit today and some very good traumatised children giving statements,

all in shock but doing something that should'nt have occured in the first place.
I hate to say this but......should it happen again you heard it here first.

00:2610604Ian.I spoke to Gordon Measey today DDC Highways man.He said that DDC cameras are mainly used for Anti-Social behaviour, but I have to have a word with someone on Tuesday,I also bought it up at a meeting tonight with a KCC Councillor, and I will speak to Gordon Cowan tomorrow because the Speed Cameras are run by KCC.
I also spoke to a teacher tonight from the DGSG and she thought it was a good idea.
On a different note how was the Party tonight at Cullins Yard, when I asked if anyone got drunk......and your name came up.

00:3810607Thank you for your input John.
As an aside, The time is 23-30hrs, I had a very nice meal thank you and out drank anyone else, I am not boasting.
The conversation was very nice and I WILL be up at 05-30 in the morning and on the job at 06-30.
I would also like to add. I was the first one there and the last one to leave, making sure that all arrived safely and left the building safely, I take my job VERY seriously I would have you know.
Now to the very serious point, IS there any action we can take?
