- 29 June 2010 14:3058419Andy, on the front page of this forum I wrote, just after gov. decided to send away all the immigration officers from Dover Port, that people could attempt getting through hidden in the trailers of lorries and risk dying. And that the common knewledge in Calais that the border controls in Dover are being drastically dismantled would be an incitement for more to try it.
I also got shot down in flames about two weeks ago on this forum for proposing a one pound per vehicle toll in British commercial ports so as to help cover the costs of border patrol. i think my worse crime was to have proposed that the employed people be British. I also sent that very same proposal to Charlie Elphiske by email, just before posting it on the Forum, and he replied stating that, sadly, it doesn't work like that, but that he would like to see more parity betwen british lorry-drivers and foreign ones, as the latter are evidently priviledged.
I believe it was Alec who backed me up on this one on the forum, stating that foreign lorry drivers don't even buy petrol in britain and just haul it over in laden tanks from the continent...

A group of migrants look delighted after being freed from a sealed lorry which they stowed away on to cross the English Channel. Eight suspected illegal immigrants were hauled off the lorry by police in Dover, Kent.
Officers were seen escorting them into the back of a police van on Palmerston Road.The migrants posed for cameras as they were detained - smiling, waving and giving the thumbs up. They were all men, believed to be aged between 20 and 40, who spoke little to no English. Five were from Afghanistan, two from Iraq and one was Iranian.Police officers then spoke to the driver of the lorry, who insisted that his trailer was empty when he collected it in France.The driver also stated that a code was needed to open the doors.
The suspected illegal immigrants were all taken to Dover Port for checks.A spokeswoman for Kent Police told MailOnline: 'We were called at 2.43pm on Thursday following the discovery of a number of people in a lorry in Palmerston Road, Whitfield''Officers attended and the eight people discovered are being handed over to the Home Office immigration enforcement facility in Dover.'

I always wonder how they get away with making up these numbers to score political points, and how any listener/viewer is actually taken in by the figures.
