From the BBC today comes news of 17 dehydrated illegal immigrants caught in the back of a lorry: given news like this, how can the sacking of Immigration Officers in Dover be justified? I ask Charlie Elphicke to get this terrible decision reversed.

yes andy i too have contacted charlies website over this.
it was a crass decision by the last government, that hopefully will be reversed by the new regime.
the cost of keeping the staff is minimal and in the long run is very profitable when everything is take into account.

Those illegals should have been detected in their port of departure where there are 3 seperate opportunities for them to be detected by either the the French security operating either x ray or carbon monoxide sensors or the Immigration Service using either visual or carbon monoxide sensors assisted by dogs. You can have has many operatives as you want but if thay are lacking in competence then they are inneffective as demonstrated by the latest Dover detection.

howard, just as good by all acounts if not better.every body has an off day.
The real question is, did we send them straight back to France? I think we all know the answer to that one.
No, the real question is, how are they? Regardless of why and from where and how. The where to next question really is the second one.
Bern, I made the assumption that as a caring nation we would, of course, make sure they were okay. That shouldn't mean put into some luxury b&b while we work out what benefits they are entitled too.

bern is right here, sort them out health wise then send them back to where they came from i.e. france.
their problem not ours.
I must have napped - when did we become a caring nation?
OK - I apologise already!

Ken the problem is that under French law they will not x-ray containers etc., nor will they check drivers cabs - some guff about privacy. Our border control officers over in places like Calais have a physical limit to how many trucks, vans and cars they can check without significantly disrupting the sailing schedule. Fortunately, as Howard has pointed out, we have an excellent tack record here at detecting these things

50-50 realy. I worked on the security side in Dover for a number of years.
You cannot check 100% of vehicles on any day, Ive found adults and children in the boots of cars, either no passports or they are wanted. How far can you take this one without holding up port traffic?
A very difficult one this.

grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet.
Fortunately (?) they alerted port officials to their plight by banging on the sides of the lorry.
One can only presume that on less hot days of the year similar consignments are dropped off further up the road by their Polish driver!

as ian said it is impossible to check every vehicle, luckily they managed to get themselves heard otherwise we would have been putting up a memorial on the seafront again.
Immigration is a thorny subject and unfortunately no one person has the correct solution.
How ever I think the subject has come full circle. I was watching an article on news night and I saw an obvious foriegner say that Enoch Powell was right in his speech "RIVERS OF BLOOD" so if the foriegners living here are calling for a ban on immigration. Surely it is time for the "new boys" to begin to implement that policy.
The "new boys" have already shown signs of weakness on the subject as all they are prepared to discuss is immigration from outside the EU.The emperors new cloths springs to mind (please refer Hans Christian Anderson) The current estimate is a ban on 1300 immigrants and yet we have a current immigration total from the EU of 509000. Now I am quite prepared to accept that I am pretty damned thick when it comes to this subject but even a thicko like me can spot the obvious, Damian Greene and his advisers are persistantly avoiding the issue because we are in the EU, "So What"it should not be a case of what matters to Britians part in this shennannigans but rather what is important to Britian and I am pretty damn certain that will not include being over run from people within the EU.
Are we going to ban people such as Magdy Yacub the famous heart surgeon from Egypt?? and at the same time allow economic migrants from eastern europe I hope not but alas am not optimistic.

A 20-year-old Romanian man is lucky to be alive after he was discovered hidden inside the rear wheel compartment of a jet arriving this week in London. The stowaway, who was apparently looking for work, braved low oxygen and outside air temperatures during the flight as low as 40 below zero. Upon his discovery at London's Heathrow Airport, he was covered in bruises and showing signs of hypothermia, but still alive.
The man apparently climbed under a fence at Vienna's Schwechat airport, hiding himself beneath a private jet that had been parked there since last week. The plane had to fly at a lower-than-normal altitude to avoid bad weather, allowing the man to survive what would normally be a fatal combination of cold and lack of air.
UKBA authorities declined to press charges. As Romania is part of the European Union, the "passenger" was technically allowed to visit on holiday. He was cautioned and freed with no further action.

What an idiot. Why risk death when all he needed to do was to get a passport and come into the UK as a passenger like everyone else in Europe. As an EU citizen he could come and go as he wishes. Perhaps he had rather forgotten Romania joined the EU in January 2007. Some people.
On another note, the IOs who dealt with the seventeen are from the same team who are about to be given the chop as clearly they are deemed to be internally unnecessary despite being based at the busiest passenger port in the country. Petition is online against the job losses.

Much as though I dislike bringing politics into all these threads, I do have to say that our local UKIP branch is supporting Phil and his colleagues in this absurd decision. I would appeal to every Dovorian, of whatever poltical colour, to sign Phil's online petition; if you don't like the politics of it all, just do it to support employment in our town and the knock-on effect that will have on the economy. I know it's a small number of people, but that's irrelevant.....these are local people affected by this, your neighbours, friends and fellow forumites. And, if for no other reason, sign to support a good man and committed Dovorian; Phil is one in a million, and deserving of everybody's support on here.
