Ok cat among the pigeons with my thoughts on food banks then I will run and hide.
The vast majority of those that are in need do not know how to manage their meager finances properly.
They will have Sky rather than Freeview, they will smoke, they will buy packet food rather than cook from scratch which is so much cheaper and usually better for you.
I have been skint in the past but we always had enough food on the table and heat in the winter simply because like most of my generation I could budget.

Jan no reason to run and hide and yes I agree with you. YES I do :D
But look at this if you never learned how to save and get taught how to deal and set priorities. Normally you learn this from Parents. So hardly surprising the next generation wont know how to deal with it either.
The state made these people dependant instead of beeing independant .... and this for the last 15 years.
So it will be very very difficult to reverse this ..
I think it is also where people put their priorities. if sky box is more important then food ... then this doesnt surprise me ..
But there are People outthere who really need that extra hand and these get usually overlooked ... sadly.

7 Packets of 20 fags @ £7 = £49 or:- Sack of spuds £7. A dozen cabbages £7. Two fresh chickens £7. 2kg frozen beef mince £7. Sack of onions £7. 3 dozen eggs £7. Allow another £7 for sundries like bread, flour, sugar, tea, baked beans etc, and that will equal the cost of a week's habit for one 20-a-day smoker, but will feed a family of six for a week. We all have a choice, but should society be there to cushion people from the consequences of making foolish lifestyle choices?

25Kg sack of rice does a family of 7 for 2 meals a day for a month for £32. 31kg of mixed fresh and frozen veg costs £31 and does 7 for a month, 2kg Mature Cheese £10, when used as an ingredient, lasts a month for 7, eggs direct from local hens living in hobbyists' gardens - can obtain 3 doz for £6, so £30 for a month, 48 rashers of bacon £10, 12kg loose dried oats, grains, dried fruits provides breakfasts for a month for £22 etc and etc - shopping around, not using any of the major supermarkets and making a bit of effort can see £300 feed a family of 7 for a month without having to buy any pre-packaged, pre-prepared, highly processed foods.
As a smoker, I would drop the fags in an instant if they impinged on the food budget. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have been able to balance the household budget without dropping any of my bad habits entirely, although when times were really tough just after we got back to the UK from the Far East, the bad habits were severely curtailed in order to ensure that the house was warm and that everyone was fed properly.
